Dry Eye & Mask Problem

Post by Rubyslipperss » Fri Apr 20, 2018 11:59 am

I have “dry eye” and have a constant accumulation of sleeper like crud in my eyes. No problem during the day but at night it also is on the skin under my eyes. Last night it caused an irritation on my face where my mask came in contact with it. The mask fit is still great, no leakage and very comfortable otherwise.

I just ordered some face lotion that is designed specifically for use with a CPAP. Not very expensive so I won’t be out much if it doesn’t help. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Ruby,
I've had intermittent issues with what you describe. Small leaks around the nose can be an issue, but more to the point...air blowing through tear ducts will cause that problem. Any eye Doc...optometrist can diagnose this and propose a solution.

Artificial tears, use generously whenever needed.

Seasonal allergies, poor humidification for your conditions, mask air leak directed up into the eye(s), hose/mask exhaust directed toward eyes, something growing inside the machine/hose/mask to which you are sensitive, food/diet, medication or combos of two or more, your level of hydration (maybe as a result of night visits to the toilet?),....just as examples of things that can work alone, or in concert, to cause what you are experiencing.

I use artificial tears but they don’t last long enough at night. Mask isn’t leaking either. Hopefully the lotion will help.

This is one of the main reasons I switched from my F&P Simplus to the
Amara View. Never could seem to keep it from drying my eyes out. I tried pretty much everything including sleeping in tanning glasses.

I've had good luck with lubricant ointment - something with the formulation of mineral oil 42.5 and white petroleum 57.3%

I was watching a YouTube video and the lady said she wore a sleeping mask at night so that the air did not blow in her eyes. Maybe that will help

Thanks for all the suggestions. I dug out my eye drops that never seems to help much any time of the day much less night. I will use them tonight. The lotion will be here Monday. Has anyone ever used RespLabs Medical Inc. CPAP Chap Mask Face Cream - 1.4 oz Petroleum Free, Nose & Facial Lotion? I hope it works.

I find using "heavy duty" eye drops at night coupled with an eye mask stops all the dry eye problems that I had when I first began using CPAP.
Have a look at these - I can use them with a full face mask.

I am sure I don't look very glamourous wearing so much attached to my face but I am well passed that worry!
Hope you find a solution that suits you.
