Great Results!

Post by Asdfg » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:13 pm

Hi Everyone!

I'm new here and to CPAP but thought I'd share some thoughts since I notice a lot of threads end up being how people are struggling (I certainly hope that coming here helps them) and that can end up discouraging people from trying CPAP machines. I just started and the results have been fantastic.

My wife had been bugging me to get a sleep study because of snoring and her noticing that it seemed like I stopped breathing during the night. I also noticed being tired all the time, especially when I drive, so after probably a year of her being on me to talk to my doctor, I did. I ended up taking a home sleep study and had an AHI of 108 (yuck). I was immediately prescribed a CPAP. I got my ResMed Airsense 10 Auto CPAP on Wednesday with an Airfit 20 full face mask (mouth breather.)

My first four nights I have had AHI's of 2.3, 5.1, 1.7, and 0.6! I can honestly say I haven't had this much energy in years. I'm not tired when I drive, am able to stay up later and feel more alert all day. I'm honestly shocked at how much better I feel. Also my wife is happy because I'm not snoring anymore.

Sure, the mask is annoying a bit but the trade off is well worth it. If my quality of life is going to improve dramatically, I can deal with getting used to a mask. I know I probably experience more of a benefit than a lot of people since my sleep apnea was so high before, but I'm now encouraging some of my friends who have told me they feel tired all the time to get sleep studies because if they have sleep apnea...this potentially can really help. If I continue to see these results I think this machine is a life saver!

Welcome to the forum.
Congratulations on your rather immediate success...watch out the people who aren't so lucky may find out where you live and come visit in the night and poke holes in your hose.
Good job...it's pretty much all downhill from here. There will be a few bumps in the road (we all have them from time to time) but you should be able to deal with them fairly effectively.

Congratulations to getting off to a great start. I am one of those that did not notice much difference immediately. My changes were gradual, and took about three months before I really noticed a difference.

That is great news.

Thanks for posting. Of course, one should understand that people who have issues are more likely to post than those of us who don't.

Your story is similar to mine, only that happened back in 1999.

The one common thread between you and me is that we both have quite severe cases. Your AHI was more than twice what mine was and they told me it was quite severe. Perhaps there is a correlation between severity and compliance. I guess the more severe the case, the more dramatic the relief.

Congratulations! One thing I didn't catch is how your wife is sleeping now that you have the machine. To be honest, my wife experienced the most significant sleep improvements at first when I started on the machine. While it woke me up a few times, and the benefits weren't immediate for me, the lack of my snoring improved her nights slumber immensely. The next morning her comments were that whether that machine was doing me any good or not, I would keep using it or else. I guess in a way the benefits to me were just a bonus. It didn't take long however to where the benefits to me were very noticeable as well.

My wife is sleeping much better. She's a very sensitive sleeper and my snoring was an issue. She says I'm not snoring at all now.

Unrelated but I also noticed I have less heartburn during the night as well. It's amazing how much better things are with the machine for me.
