sleepyhead news

don't know how many of you look regularly at the "Announcement" section above. i skim it now and then.

but look under Pugsy's Pointers. looks like the sleepyhead author is doing more coding again. a cohort of his (A KLERK) says he has new versions that include devilbiss!

it's all waaay to technical for me, but i know there are people here who can understand it.

palerider? got your ears on?
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

That's great news, thanks for bringing it up!

PaleRider and Mark had a falling out way back when the last version was being worked on.
I wouldn't be holding my breath on the chances of PR getting very involved this time.

I don't have the time myself to do more than be a guinea pig for a new version. I just don't have the time to go bug hunting and the necessary work that is involved with working with a new version. I do appreciate the work that others do and I wish I could help more but as you all can probably imagine...my plate is rather full here with the moderator stuff and the regular helping stuff.
I couldn't do it justice and it would be a half assed job and I don't want to go into it half assed. There's a lot of behind the scenes work involved when developing a new version for not just Mark but those that are involved in helping him and I just don't have the time to do it right.

I am pretty sure that what few gripes I have about the current version have already been brought up...like the default leak red line thing that causes so many headaches and panic for Respironics users.

Me either... but, maybe he'll take my advice that precipitated the falling out anyway, and talk to YOU about the things that cause ongoing confusion with new users... and fix those things.

I was involved in the last two versions, Towards the end of the activity on the currently released one, Mr Watkins started feeling that everyone was against him, that he was being pressured unreasonably to work on sleepyhead.

I suggested that he talk to Pugsy and RobySue about things that they saw that were confusing to new users, (things like defaulting to resmeds 24lpm leak line even though the user had respironics... and putting "your leaks are terrible" on the first page as a result. Calling centals "clear airway" when the user had a resmed, and resmed doesn't use that term, etc).

I know there's more, things that Pugsy is forever having to explain to new people.

After the suggestion that he explore usability with Pugsy and RobySue, he decided I was trying to undermine him, shut me out of the testing, and posted a rambling things here about people that were out to get him....

I'd be happy to help test SH again, but I ain't holdin my breath. ;)

Yes, I'm pleased to report things are happening again, the major blocker to the code-base (namely QtWebkit being killed off with an entirely unsuitable replacement) has been resolved thanks to Annulens QtWebkit revival project. (Which I totally wish I discovered sooner, but it wasn't the only thing I needed upstream fixes for :/)

And yeah, I did go quiet, some of it was periods of ill health and pesky real life responsibilities, but a lot of it was because I was busy attempting to work around that QtWebkit nightmare, which I "succeeded" in at least build wise, but had to kill off a lot of stuff I darn well liked to be able to do it, and to be honest, I know I would never have heard the end of it, so I didn't feel comfortable pushing it and setting that path in stone. After that was researching how the heck to to basically redesign a MASSIVE chunk of SleepyHead from scratch and port away from Qt entirely, without breaking compatibility, because Qt kept throwing brick walls in my face. I really didn't want to blindly dive headfirst into the deep end like I did when migrating from wxWidgets to Qt in the first place... And as it turned out in the end, there really is no decent OpenSource alternative to Qt.

As for the working on the old code-base, I did not personally see a lot of point writing and pushing fixes to a code-base that would not even compile on my main (and basically only reliable) development computer against the last version of Qt that supported webkit (Qt5.5)... It didn't make sense rolling back to a previous OS and running old development software at the cost of security... for a good chunk of time I was genuinely uncertain of that code-bases future.

Anyway... The good news is the Qt project after this annoying fiasco has now learned to take things a little more seriously, and offers Long Term Support editions, to help reduce the frequency of these nightmares occurring in the future.

I have reorganised my office and built myself a new dedicated desktop development workstation that runs both Windows & Linux, so for the first time I can finally have all three systems accessible at my desk (at once if I count my old linux box, but it doesn't have SleepyHead capable graphics, for now I can at least dual boot into Linux for proper testing... I'll get around to replacing that machine later)

I have fully built Annulens QtWebkit tree against the Qt 5.9.4 build on my MacBook with the latest OS/Xcode and full debugging support, and SleepyHead code-base runs stable on it.
I haven't managed to build webkit stuff on Windows yet, but have 5.9.4 "Release mode" binaries that at least allow SleepyHead to run stable. On Windows I still have to debug under crashy Qt 5.5 for now, but it's better than nothing.
Haven't bothered with this step on Linux yet, because I can basically pull Qt with compatible QtWebkit libraries in through a lot of distro's package managers, and I have others currently helping me with it who can do that.

I have added DV64 support, it's nearly complete.. It's nice to see Devilbiss machines with Flow waveforms now. (A big thanks to Heyns for his hard work in hacking and documenting all the important bits of the data format.)
I've added support for the newer DreamStation AutoSV machines too... Still a little more to do, but nearly there.
There is a Weinmann importer out there that I'm excited we will hopefully see in the code-base real soon, since I never had a chance to finish mine.
A lot of minor bugs and patches have been brought into the main tree on top of all that.

Far too many people seem to measure activity in terms of code commits, forum participation and binary releases... sometimes a lot of researching, and waiting for upstream is involved.
I can't always be running full steam, though I can tell you, it's much easier to make progress when I'm actually able to build and run the bloomin' program.

Hi Jedimark!

Glad to see you're feeling better! I've been using your excellent software for years, and even my Doctor was impressed.

Before you get too deep into the project again, I do have 1 minor suggestion.

While the coding is important, it's not nearly as important as you health. Take care of that first!

Thank you again for the all the hard work, and time you and the others have put into your project. I appreciate it!

-Bill

Hi, Jedimark,

Thank you for all your work producing and updating Sleepyhead. I use it, and it has helped me understand more clearly what is going on with my cpap treatment.

regards,

Hi Jedimark!

Just adding my voice here to say thanks so much for all your hard work. Sleepyhead also helped me understand my treatment, and by doing so made me all the more determined to continue. I really need to use CPAP so I am very grateful indeed for SH.

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better. Thanks for the detailed status update.

I just want to be the most recent of many to tell you that I love the software. I got a brick about 10 years ago and quit using it after a year or two. Eight years passed without my using CPAP.

A year ago I got a DreamStation. The machine is of course much better than the old brick, but the major difference to me is the detailed info I get from SleepyHead. It has kept me motivated and wanting to use my machine. I can see just how much it is helping. When I was starting out I imported and checked my info every single day. Now that I've dialed in my settings I only check every few days.

You are literally a lifesaver to many people. That is not hyperbole.

if it weren't for sleepyhead, I wouldn't be "the squeaky wheel" trying to get my Dr to LISTEN to the fact
that I'm still having centrals. So..thank you!
