Taking mask off when turning to sleep on side

Post by KTinTexas » Mon Apr 09, 2018 9:27 am

I still can't seem to wear my mask for more than 2 or 3 hours a night and I think I'm taking it off when I turn from my back to sleep on my side. In fact, I'm sure that's what I am doing because I have become aware of it but can't seem to stop myself. I put on my mask and lie on my back while I'm "acclimating" to the CPAP every night. It takes me some time to relax (but not too long because I'm used to it now). So, I'm able to fall asleep with the mask on but can't seem to sleep on my side with it. I can only sleep on my left side because I have problems with my right shoulder (2 surgeries, still have pain). I have a deviated septum into my right nostril so when I turn to lie on my left side, that nostril MIGHT be closing off further. Any suggestions?

What mask?? Full face, nasal?? Try to acclimate on your side, u might just doze off. Try wearing your mask watching tv to get really, really used to it, it works. But enter your machine & mask so others can answer you better....been there, done that... :)

Have you tried taping the side straps of the mask to your cheeks so that the discomfort of the tape pulling on your skin causes you to wake up and stop the mask removal?

If that doesn't stop it...maybe try something worn over your head so that all the headgear is under the whatever you are wearing over the headgear and it's harder to remove???
Some sort of version of a do-rag maybe??

Something like an old fashioned swimming cap maybe?
Anything to help keep the headgear from being so easy to pull off.

I've tried the tape but that doesn't work because I use surgical tape that is easy to remove. (I once was told by my eye doctor to tape my left eye shut because it was so dry; I used regular tape and when I pulled it off, I got a black eye). Lately I've been pinning the back strap to my hair but I still take the hair clips off. I've decided to try a nasal mask with more straps (the Mirage FX for Her) to see if that helps. Also, it's a nasal not the nasal pillows and I'm hoping that helps as well. I've considered trying hypnosis and I might just do that as well.
