Using rubber O ring to fix pillow mask seal

Post by yrnkrn » Tue Mar 20, 2018 2:31 am

I have been using the Opus 360 pillows mask for years, suffering from small but annoying leaks between the pillows and my right nostril which is a bit larger than the left one.
New pillows leak from time to time (depending on pressure) and old pillows leak even more. Yesterday I found an effective and cheap solution to this, embedding a rubber ring inside the pillows, like this:

Image

In fact, old pillows with the rubber ring embeeded seal better than new pillows!

The rubber O ring data for the Opus 360 is:

OD (Outer diameter)=23mm
CS (Cross section)=2.4mm
ID (Inner diameter)=18.2mm

May not be the optimal O ring but it works very, very well.

edit: fixed to "O ring"

If the lab rat awards were still around, I bet you would get one.

For those playing along at home If you walked into a Home Depot or any hardware store these are called O rings and are in the plumbing department. You should find quite a few sizes in different diameters and thicknesses.

I'm typing this because I've seen maybe posts in other forums over the years where people say they can't find them when they go into a store because they ask for Rubber Rings and get sent to I don't know the electrical department and they look at you funny. :?

Interesting and different use of the O rings. A while back people were using them around the "neck" of the pillow.
Hadn't ever thought about using them inside the pillow.

Yes, they are called "O" rings.
Harbor Freight sells an assortment of sizes, packed together.
Better hardware stores may have them in the "bins", little drawers of single items,
arranged in order of size.

It's still around (in the archives). Not much "new" when it comes to this therapy.
Quite a few links in this list to using "O rings".

My compliments to the OP. Clever, and creative. I do have a somewhat related question, though...it appears as if the distant nose insert is substantially larger in diameter at the orifice's upper edge than is the one closer...with the O ring. Is this an artefact of the imaging process or a reality? Curious.

Ah, but this is new because it's suggesting using the O-ring INSIDE the pillow instead of on the outside.

I've got to get me to Harbor Frieght, but for a cheap source of knitting supplies. Rubber O-rings make the best stitch markers ever, and it's hard to find them in bunches of sizes packed together. They also have inexpensive rubber puzzle shaped floor mats--perfect for blocking knitwear. :D

Thanks!
The pillows are the same size and symmetrical. Their form is about ellipse and the photo angle is such we see the distant one long axis and the nearest one short axis. This is how they look from another angle:

Another thing, may be worth trying to obtain silicon O rings to to avoid a bit of rubber smell from the rubber O ring.
