Nasal congestion and sneezing

Post by beemanjack » Mon Mar 19, 2018 8:17 am

Trying to get used to my Redmed S9 and having some difficulties. Some mornings, I wake with a sneezing fit that usually lasts a full day. I had read that the level of humidity had something to do with that, but I have tried high and low settings and nothing seems to work. I thought rainout might be the issue as our bedroom temp is around 68 F. so I purchased a snuggle wrap for the hose. Success with that has been spotty at best. Any ideas out there?

I take it the sneezing is happening today?
What setting for humidity did you use last night?
How often are you changing the humidity setting trying high and low? Nightly?
Where do you live? What is the usual ambient humidity in your locale and in your house?

Have you been looked at for seasonal allergies?

Thanks to those to offering advice and help. I live in the mid-south, Atlantic region. Humidity in the house this time of year, while still using heat when needed, is around 30% - 40%. I have tried humidity levels from 1.5 to 4.5 (which empties the reservoir overnight). I usually leave the setting for several nights, assuming it takes some time to adjust to new settings. The sneezing is accompanied by a constant "tingling" in the nasal passage. I do not normally have Spring allergies. The ones I have are in the Fall. My previous machine, a RemStar Pro M, did not have this problem. The air seemed to float over the water while on the S9, the air seems to bubble through the water. My setting is 9.0 and this seems to be more forceful than in my old machine. (That may be an illusion as the S9 is much quieter so the ear does not perceive the machine is working hard.) Thanks again to all.

The M series machine cranked out a lot more humidity at any given setting than the S9 machine will crank out at similar setting.
The M series machine didn't have a humidity sensor in the device to take into account the ambient room humidity.
The S9 machine has a humidity sensor in the device and takes into account the ambient humidity.

I suspect your issues are cpap rhinitis (google it) and you just need more added moisture to keep your nasal mucosa happy.

Yes..it's annoying to have all the water get used up during the night and have to refill every day but it's a lot less annoying than the allergy like symptoms.

Thanks, Pugsy. I did Google CPAP rhinitis and it is spot on to what I am experiencing. At least now I know what it is and can take some sort of action to alleviate the symptoms. Also found on line that I am not the only one for sure. That helps some as well.

The humidifier is a convenience, facilitator, not 'therapy' in itself, and is always optional. I live N. of you and never use mine at all.

Thanks again to all who offered advice. As of this morning, I feel like a new man. Acting on the Maso-Motor Rhinitis angle, offered by Pugsy, I upped the heat level and headed for the drugstore to purchase a nasal lubricating product to use just before going to sleep. Based on four nights sleep with this setup, I have not experienced sneezing, watery eyes and nasal congestion upon removing the mask. And believe me, the sneezing and watery eyes had been terrible and had lasted most of the day prior this. I was amazed this "cure" worked from the first night!

I will give a shout-out to a product I found that my home will never be without again. This one is called NeilMed NasoGel. Its label specifically says it is for " dry and irritated nasal passages caused by....sleep apnea equipment use." As a side benefit, it is half the price of Ayr.

Sounds like you might be like I am...my nasal mucosa would be happiest snorting water.

I still get an ugly reminder on occasion when I forget to fill the water chamber and I run out during the night. Fortunately I don't forget very often.

The nasal mucosa want what they want no matter what your ambient humidity might be.
