Aircurve 10 st smartstart

Post by 45011ohio » Mon Mar 12, 2018 11:41 am

About 3 weeks ago I got my new Aircurve 10 ST VPAP machine. Every night I have to physically turn the machine on.
My previous machine (Airsense 10 ) had an auto start function that was nice. Just put the mask on and it started right up. I went through the on screen settings and founf the smartstart setting, but the machine will not let me turn it on, is there a way to do this? My DME provider (Lincare) wants me to bring it in for them to check. The rep said that it could not be done remotely.
I am sure there must be a way for me to turn it on, I just have not figured it out yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :?:

If you see a setting called "Leak Alert" turned on...go in and turn it off and see if you then will be able to access Smart Start.

Thanks pugsy, that did the trick.
My question now is why can't you have both, SmartStart and Leak Alert.
I don't understand why they should be one or the other, exclusive.
Maybe just wishful thinking by an ignorant end user!
Hope you catch the sarcasm in the last statement.

I don't know why ResMed elected to make it one or the other and not both but it's been that way on the various ResMed models that have the leak alert since I started cpap therapy.

Probably because the leak alert is supposed to wake you up so you can fix the leak instead of having such a big leak that the machine thinks you are no longer attached but supposedly of your own choice and not because of a large leak.

Pros and cons either way I suppose. One of those thing that I just shrug my shoulders and say "it is what it is and no one ever bothered to tell us why it is what it is". I just know that on most ResMed machines that have leak alert (not all models have it) if you turn on Leak Alert you disable SmartSense features.

I like SmartSense myself and my model machine doesn't have leak alert option but it also won't turn itself off if I take the mask off.
Works great on the inhale part to get it started though. Not a big deal. It's a known issue with the mask type that I use (and probably some other types) and the pressure that I am usually using by the time I wake up which is fairly low. So I always have to turn it off manually anyway.

A follow up question also if you don't mind Pugsy,,,,,,
Last night I managed to disconnect the supply hose from my mask. The machine just kept on pumping like there was not a problem. I do not recall it even beeping a leak alert. It did not shut itself off either. The first thing I remember is the loud hissing coming from the air tube. Maybe the "Leak Alert" being 'on' is why the machine did not shut off? Just a guess on my part. It did use up the entire tank of H2O also. I fill it up just about every night.

Yes...leak alert being on would prevent the machine from shutting off.
Also low pressures with certain masks will also prevent it from shutting off...or any machine even with or without leak alert being involved.

The "alert" part of the leak alert is a very low barely audible beeping. Pretty useless IMHO anyway. Easily missed with the noise of a hose coming off and the hurricane that goes along with the hose coming off.

Yes.. I like to have some music going when I sleep, Real Smooth Jazz or Light classical at a low background volume.
Makes hearing the 'leak Alert' beeping nearly impossible.

Thats my guess... it'd be harder (but probably not impossible) to say "well, is this a big leak, or is the mask off, do we or don't we make noise?"

that said, on the s9 machines, the built in beeper is pretty wimpy. the COPD and iVAPS units have an axillary alarm unit sandwiched between the blower and humidifier, and that sucker is LOUD. (my TX has one too).

Amusing useless factoid... since uses the same circuit board for all machines, they ALL have a beeper, even though only some of them have the leak alert function... heh.
