Heated Hosing

Post by randybassett » Wed Mar 07, 2018 5:20 am

I decided to try heated hosing for my machine (Airsense 10 elite). I noticed I am going through much more water pith this hose at the same humidity setting. With the regular hose, one fill of the reservoir would last over 2 nights. Now it barely lasts one night.

I assume this can be expected given that heat has been added to the system.

Do people turn their humidity setting down on the machine when they change to heated hosing?

Thanks,
Randy

I let the autopilot sort it out.
It is smarter than this frog.

Several factors impact the amount of water used even with no change in the humidity setting.

1...ambient humidity in the bedroom which changes often depending on various circumstances (rain outside, use of furnace, etc)
2...leaks
3...pressure changes if using auto adjusting pressures..more pressure will consume more water

I never change the humidity setting. I have to top off the water chamber every night. I do change the hose air temperature depending on the season but I never change the humidity setting. My nose doesn't like for me to go changing the humidity from what it is used to.

The newer, better machines will regulate the humidity to prevent rain-out; effectively overriding your settings. If you have a heated hose, it can pump out more humidity without rain-out.

No they don't over ride your humidity setting to prevent rain out. That's why we have temperature controls for the hose air.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I did not realize that I could change hosting temperature. I am going to leave it on auto for now and make sure I don't run out of water overnight. At least I know I can play with that option if needed.

Thanks again.

I used an AS10 Autoset during my initial therapy and monitoring prior to getting insurance approval. I ended up with a straight CPAP Elite model like yours because I have been 'cured' with straight 8 cm H20 pressure all night long with ramp. My Elite uses almost three times the volume of water more than the Autoset on the same settings. If the quality control is quite good for the product, it might be some design issue or difference between the two that causes our model to go through so much water. I have left the hose temp the same, but reduced my humidity demand to a setting of 1, and I now get just over two night's worth of use starting with a full tank.

Pugsy... I am curious that you don't set climate control to auto, but manually set the temperature according to the season. How come? Wondering if there is a good reason to do that.

My autoset uses about 3/4 if a tank per night whether I use the heated or slim hose.

Is it that big a deal to fill every night? Distilled water is cheap compared to the benefits of CPAP.

Because "Auto" is a setting of 4 on the humidifier and my nose likes a setting of 6. It get dry and congested a bit when the humidity is on the low side.. I can do the setting of 4 but I have to use a lot of Simply Saline stuff during the day and right before bedtime.

The temperature...even if I liked the setting of 4 I like cooler air in the summer and warmer air in the winter because I keep my house on the cold side and cold air going up my nose causes the nose to hurt. My bedroom gets down to the low 50s when it's cold outside.
I need the warmer air both for comfort in my nose and rain out prevention. But that same warmer air is annoying in the summer.

I have done the "auto" thing and found that it just doesn't suit my needs exactly.
