Re: Central Apneas?
The difference in pressure correlates with how much air is taken into the lungs with a normal breathing effort. Take too much air in and your CO2 levels drop too low. Your body won't breathe while asleep if CO2 levels are too low. So you hold your breath until CO2 rises high enough to signal the bod...

Re: Central Apneas?
A large difference in pressure between IPAP and EPAP can cause central apneas. Try lowering your IPAP to no more than 3 above your EPAP.

Re: Subconciously addicted to my CPAP machine
Eric, you came on a forum dedicated to x (where x is something beneficial) and basically said "x can kill you", so you'd have to expect some level of antagonism! Statements like " it seems if I am on the machine long enough the human body may not be able to survive if removed " do a disservice to ot...

Re: Clusters of hypopneas with no flow limitation
I would lower your PS Min to the default of 3. A min PS of 6 is enough to actually induce centrals in someone who doesn't normally have them. If your machine is over-ventilating you at baseline, you'll be more likely to have central events.

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread...in Need of ASV Advice
When you have an inhalation pressure greater than exhalation pressure, your breathing is "supported" because the added pressure makes it "easier" to breathe -- less effort is required to take in the same quantity of air. If you were to hold everything else about your breathing constant -- your respi...

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread...in Need of ASV Advice
Thanks for responding, idlewire. I understand what you mean now, but my pressure graph doesn't show PS. On your chart, "Pressure" is IPAP, so to figure out PS, you would take that and subtract EPAP. So, for example if "Pressure" is 12 and EPAP is 4, your PS is 8. You'll have to exclude glitchy time...

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread...in Need of ASV Advice
But some simple advice about when to consider if and when I should increase pressure again would also be very hellpful. I can answer your other question later, but for this, you can zoom in on the time leading up to your hypnopnea. Check the Pressure graph and see if pressure support is at it...

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread...in Need of ASV Advice
The ASV will respond to any drop in ventilation, regardless of cause, with increased pressure support (assuming it is not already at PS Max). Whether or not it hits PS Max during hypnopnea will depend on the duration of the hypnopnea, how much air you're taking in during it, and your breathing patte...

Re: Lozaman's ASV Therapy Thread
Two months ago I started to stop breathing (or very shallow breathing) when I would fall asleep, then I'd wake up with a racing heart, over and over, leading to severe sleep deprivation. I'm not exactly sure what's happening with me, but I do know that at sleep onset, I definitely stop or shallow b...

If you PM me, I can point you in the direction of a used ResMed S9 ASV for an unbeatable price. This is the previous generation model but the breathing algorithm is supposed to be virtually the same as the current model.

Re: What happened last night??
Looks like you're in ASV mode instead of ASVAuto with a fixed EPAP of 5. Since the machine can't raise EPAP, it can't help your obstructive apneas. Try switching to ASVAuto mode, Min EPAP 5, Max EPAP 15.

Also you missed the part where he set the min and max pressure both to 4.Jas_williams wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2019 12:09 amTo me it does not look like you have sleep apnoea yet as your machine did not raise pressure

Dug into this a little further. It looks like thiamine has been shown -- in vitro, at least -- to inhibit carbonic anhydrase, similar to the prescription drug acetazolamide, a well-known respiratory stimulant and treatment medication for central apnea. This may be why the OP has seen results. I don'...

That's just a data recording glitch. I've seen it happen on my ASV from time to time. You can see from the Mask Pressure chart that the EPAP did not actually drop at all.

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but I know of one case (posted on a different CPAP forum) of a man who had had a heart attack (non-fatal), and when he later looked back at his charts, it showed the new appearance of Cheyne-Stokes 18 days prior to the heart attack. It looks like you've had this for a...
