Air Curve 10; Medistrom portable battery. Getting a longer life from the battery.

Post by Chuck Connors » Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:42 am

During the winter, the power goes out several times each year where I live. Even one night without using a CPAP can make for a grumpy and less than productive next day.

I'm using a Medistrom Pilot-24 Plus portable battery with my Air Curve 10. In order to ensure the battery is going to work for a full eight hours or longer, it's my understanding that I need to make the following adjustments on the Air Curve in order to extend the battery life: 1.Turn off heated humidification. 2. Turn to airplane mode. 3. Turn off heated hose.

I'm unable to find a setting on the Air Curve to turn off the heated hose. I'd like to think it's a matter of just swapping out the heated hose with a standard hose, although I don't think that's enough. Any input on where to turn off the heated hose in settings would be appreciated. Thank you.

Actually swapping out the heated hose for a non heated hose will work just fine if you have one handy.

If you don't have a regular hose, try swapping ends on the heated hose.
You will have a crazy jog near the headgear, but it won't heat.

Actually I am pretty sure that even with the heated hose plugged (and things set to manual) in that the humidity setting and the hose air temp can both be turned off but I don't have time to check it out.

If someone has a non heated hose....might as well use it. Then the machine only has the humidity setting to turn off.

Thank you for the replies. I'll check now with the manufacturer of the portable battery. Even though the charging indicator on the battery showed four bars, which means it was fully charged, perhaps it was giving a false reading.

I can't address the specific questions but I'll add this: The Medistron 24 is about 100 Watt-hours (airline legal) which compares to 8 Amp-hours at 12V. On the Respironics (similar to the ResMed) that I tested in various configurations the pump used 4 AH, while the heated hose used 7 AH, so this clearly wouldn't run a full night. And an active humidifier is out of the question for a small battery..

For years I kept an unheated hose for travel without the humidifier, then I discoverd the pump had a notch so that the heated hose would fit it. I don't know if ResMed is the same.
