30 Days

Post by Barbee » Fri Feb 16, 2018 8:48 pm

Hi folks,
Today marks my 30th day of Cpap therapy. Some observations:
Good stuff
I no longer cough all night from nasal discharge. As a matter of fact, I rarely cough at all.
I don’t wake up with a pounding headache
I wake up in the mornings feeling like I had a good night’s sleep
I have more energy
I no longer need to use the restroom in the middle of the night
I don’t need to plan my day around taking a nap
No more heart pounding episodes during the day
Bad stuff
I still have too many mask leaks
I still wake up in the middle of the night for a couple of hours. I guess old habits are hard to break?
My lower teeth feel like they are shifting where the mask sits
I had no idea all these things could be linked to sleep apnea.
All in all, I’m calling this first month a huge success!

Congratulations on a good 30 days Barbee, and for having the tenacity to stick with it despite the bad stuff!

Just wanted to welcome you to the forum.

I am a bit concerned about your issues with what you are experiencing with your teeth feeling weird. That's not normal and it points to maybe the mask being too tight. Sometimes less is more when it comes to tension for leak management.

also the mask sits on the bone below your teeth, just in the dent above your chin.

get the mask leak function on your machine going with the higher pressure, lay down and see what you can do, as said, looser is often better. Loosen till it leaks and then just tighten a bit, do it several times on top and bottom straps

If you are grinding your teeth in your sleep, you should get that treated too.

In my case, I have a "night guard" from the dentist. It was meant to protect the teeth, not to treat sleep apnea. I actually was using it for several years prior to CPAP, so I'm really treating each like separate conditions. Perhaps nowadays there's a more integrated approach, but this works for me, so I'm sticking with it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been focusing the past few days on placing the mask in the right place and not getting it too tight. I used to grind my teeth really bad. I now have an upper plate so there is nothing to grind against. I do try to place my mask on that bone right under my bottom leak but it wants to ride up sometimes. I will get there eventually. Im due to visit the dentist soon so he might shed some light on if my teeth are shifting or just tender from getting used to wearing the mask.

loosen off the top straps a bit, see if that helps. loosen till it leaks and then just nip up a bit.
