mask riding up

Post by BlackRaven135 » Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:57 am

I have been on CPAP for almost six months. I use a Swift FX nano, but must keep pulling it down during the night, otherwise, I will be wearing it around my eyes.
I am already a bit claustrophobic due how close the top of it is to my eyes so this does not help.
ResMed told me today in my report to make an adjustment to it, but also reported .5 events during the night
Apparently, even if it is not fitting correctly I am not having any real events from it.

Feeling frustrated and fed up. :(

There are so many masks out there... why stick with what isn't working?

Have you tried to rig a fix like some kind of strap, etc. from the bottom of the mask to the back to keep it in place?

Is the back strap slipping and therefore not stabilizing the mask?

You might try sewing some Velcro hook tape (the stiff, scratchy side) inside the back strap (so the little hooks catch onto your hair--it's not uncomfortable at all). That will stabilize the back strap and should stop the front from riding up. Also, play with the silicone head strap--see if it's better if you bring it forward just a bit--you may need to adjust the back strap accordingly.

Finally, make sure you are not making the mask too tight. Sounds paradoxical but if you are tightening the air cushion too much the tightening that you are doing might be causing it to ride up. Make sure you adjust the straps with the machine ON and only so much as needed not to leak when you are in your usual sleeping position.

If none of these suggestions work, you might need a different mask (I suggest trying the Respironics Dreamwear mask). Or possibly using the Bella loops instead of the head strap on the Nano.

The mask is going to move in the direction the straps are pulling, if it's up then the straps have to be lower so they won't pull the mask up. Jim

You may have to move your ears down, but don't cut them off!

Note that nobody should feel "locked into" his(her) existing mask type. If you have issues with one, try another. For instance this mask has straps over the top of one's head. You might try one that has straps that go behind the back of your neck.

Sorry to say it but the Swift FX Nano is not a good style of mask. It is highly prone to leaking into the eyes. It is highly prone to being displaced with even gentle movement in bed. As a sleep tech I stopped showing them to patients many years ago. They are a suboptimal design. The most comparable mask that IS a functional design is the Resmed AirFit N20. It is a very similar shape but has more structure to the cushion. The headgear is also far more stable and comfortable.
No, I have no affiliation with Resmed. I don't care what brand or style of mask a person has, it just has to be the right one for that persons face.
Who ever recommended the Swift FX Nano did you a disservice. It is an old model.
Yes, there will be some diehards out their who love their Nano, all power to them.
I recommend waste not more time with this mask. It won't get any better.
All the best.

I don't like to say a mask is a good mask or not a good mask. Rather it's good or not good for an individual patient. Everybody's face is different.

In the case of the OP, I agree that this mask is not ideal for this individual.
