Filter Mystery

I like the door on my Resmed.
The removable cover on my S9 was not quite so smart--but eons ahead of Respironics.
It must be hilarious to design a machine to spit the filter out onto the floor,
so some poor, sleep-deprived wretch has to crawl around in the night with a flashlight.
Nice. Not.

I actually prefer the crappy designed PR1 based on it sure keeps in the internals a lot cleaner, I see a lot of dust get by S9 filters coating the flow sensor. Plus if the PR1 filter gets clocked it will suck air internally through the foam under the blower housing, it turns into a giant pollen filter. If I see a lot of dust around the SD card cover, on the exterior of the blower housing, on the PCA board, and coating the inside of the display lens, I believe somebody wasn't keep their filters clean as they claim. It's like the dentist, sure you floss every day Mr Greenteeth, the dentist know who's fibbing to them. But what is weird about the PR1 is the "Mystery Hole" inside where the filter seats, even the Respironics' service instructor had no clue why there is a hole there. But back to original issue, somebody at Respironics flobbed up on how the filter just seats in the filter port, it needed a lip or something like past CPAPs had.

That stretchy the filter trick works really well for this issue, takes just a few seconds to do before you install it. I never had a customer yet that says it doesn't work.
Along the same subject of dirty filters and design I would design CPAPs where the filter is in the front so the user can easy see if the filter is dirty. Or better come up with some sort of restricted filter alarm.

my 50 series did the same thing regularly from coughs. check those filters daily. when you find it laying on the floor behind the night stand, you have no idea how long it's been out if you're not checking it daily..

You're thinking of the wrong machine. Respironics M and system one machines just have an opening on the back that the filter sits in. nothing to keep it from falling out other than friction, which is easily overcome by a cough or sneeze.

Some people turn there PR1's backwards so the filter is facing front.

I cut a strip of plastic canvas from an old craft project to run a little wider than the full length of the filter, and have it held in place by hair bands that are just narrow enough to fit between the power dial and the ramp and humidifier buttons. That way the bands don't block any of the intake, but hold the filter in place. So far so good, but it did slip one night and adjust the humidifier. But at least I'm not hunting for filters in the morning.

Just seems ridiculous that Respironics can't put a cap over the filter like the used to, when the blasted machine already costs thousands of dollars.

I'm still trying to think of a solution to this problem. Would it make sense to cut a swatch of plastic window screen to size and then to tape that over the filter, except taping only the edges? I don't believe the screen will affect the performance of the filter unduly.

I thought of that, but tape would leave a residue, and if I yell loud enough or cough hard enough, the tape might not hold. The filters were blown out and went off the edge of the table, which was a good six inches away from the machine, so a pretty strong force. The Dollar Store (7 for a dollar) hair bands are working just fine. The plastic canvas (you could use screen, but plastic craft canvas was all of 49 cents and is stiffer than a piece of screen would be) is cut to extend about 1/2 inch on either side of the filter. The bands don't block any of the intake that way. Plastic can easily slide out either side when I'll need to replace the filters.
