Which S8 for travel?

Post by hobbs » Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:41 pm

ResMed S8 Elite II CPAP with EPR vs ResMed S8 Escape II CPAP with EPR? Secondwind has both new for about the same price.
Need a travel machine for the wife. Wife uses a S9 AutoSet at home set to CPAP at 10. I could also buy a small travel machine for myself and have wife use the S8, but have a concern about the noise from small travel machines. Suggestions?

I would opt for the Elite II. If you don't have a card or card reader, at least it has some data available through the LCD. The Escape machines did not collect data.

Before you pay over $300 for an S8 with humidifier, I would look at Craigslist. I have seen low hour S8 machines as low as $100. In fact, you could buy an S9 machine for $200.

Here's a deal...even if you have to pay shipping,

If you have a concern over noise, definitely the Elite II if you are limiting yourself to those two - it introduced a much quieter motor and is fully data capable. One serious negative for the S8 is that it uses a much more problematic smart card as opposed to the virtually universal SD card. However, I would like to know all the pros and cons you have explored that led you to the S8. The S9 and the subsequent AS10 added so many beneficial features at what is now very competitive prices to virtually obsolete the S8 for all uses other than backup. LSAT's suggestion of Craigslist is a good one (provided the seller is realistic about the price). One can often find S9 autos as bargains - AS10s too. If you need a humidifier, either of the two S8/9s will double the size of the final machine - the AS10 much less so.

Hobbs was asking about a travel machine. One of the differences between the S8s and newer models is that the S8 has an internal power supply and the newer ones use an external power brick. I've read stories about travelers forgetting to pack (or re-pack) their power bricks and then their machine becomes useless (till they find another power brick).
This was also another advantage of the old Legacy model Respironics CPAP machines over their newer ones (BiPAPs had external 24v power supplies). Anyway, the more pieces and parts you have to pack, the more likely you are to eventually forget something.

True enough. However, if the user plans on using the machine with auxiliary power while traveling (such as from a cigarette lighter outlet or batttery) the power must be pure sinusoidal adding to the complexity.

Ahh...I understand. Some people aren't okay with using a used machine and that's fine.

Back to your original question ...of the 2 choices in the S8 model line you present..I would go with the Elite since the cost is about the same. Never know when that data might actually be needed or wanted and like I always say...better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it.

I am now very confused. If she will not tolerate a used machine, why are you considering S8s from Second Wind? I could not find a single S8 on their website that is NOT described as "gently used" in bold red type. In reality, I would be very surprised if one could find a genuinely new S8 virtually anywhere. If you insist on NEW, I suspect your budget will need to get bigger and focus on AS10s or one of the travel specific products if ResMed it must be.
