CPAP clogged ear after Flu.

Post by SouthSeaPirate » Sun Jan 07, 2018 8:41 pm

So just went through the worst flu I've ever had my life, seriously, felt like absolute hell.
I wasn't able to use my CPAP the entire time... which I'm sure compounded on how terrible I felt.
Anyway, once the worst was over, I tried again. I was able to handle it finally.
Unfortunately, as soon as turned it on my right clogged. Split second bubbling and then closed.
Been like that for a week now.

Heard good things about Loratadine/pseudoephedrine so just started taking that today and wishing for good luck.
Any recommendations or tips on relief? How did you all deal with this?

I agree with Julie, go see a doctor, now. I am currently fighting the nasty upper respiratory virus that is going around, so I can commiserate. Couldn't hear for 4 days out of my left ear, but it had nothing to do with the CPAP machine -- coughing closed mine off. There is probably leftover fluid in your ear - maybe an infection that needs to be addressed pronto.

Quite a few discussions on earwax on the forum over the years.
Get some earwax removal kits like ERO or Debrox and a ear bulb.

HI:
I am relatively new to CPAP, however my middle ear is a weak point in my system. What kind of mask do you use? I started out with nasal pillows and developed severe ear congestion on the side I sleep most often. Switching to ffm and using Flonase ( with Dr. consent - tho it is otc), has helped to relieve that issue for me. If you have an ENT I would check with them as others here have suggested.
Good luck!

So going to ENT is what you all did after getting clogged from Flu/CPAP?
What did they do?

Note that I was already on antibiotics, steroids, and flutoconase.

When you say fluid, is said fluid mucus.
My skull was a mess so I feel like the CPAP literally pushed mucus into my inner ear.

What one doctor may do for a patient (knowing their history vs someone else's with similar complaints) is not how you want to fix the problem. You're not a car with parts #3 or 7 to order and how that patient reacted to his MD's 'fix' may have no bearing on how you react to what your MD tries. Stop going by an online forum of strangers with very subjective versions of their stories.

Julie, I never said I am not going to one.
It is not easy for every to just go to an ENT. Only one is closer than 1 hour and 15 from me... he is booked for 5 months...
I also work... a lot.

So, that said, I cannot be the only one who got clogged ears with the Flu/CPAP use.
I am curious what their diagnosis was. No harm in asking.

Any relief with the oral decongestants you said you were going to try?
People get similar issues with the cold and flu and don't even use cpap.
I just got over some sort of upper respiratory bug but it didn't mess with my ears. So I didn't say anything because no doctor was seen to do anything with the ears since nothing needed to be done.

What pressure do you use?

If you can't see an ENT specialist for a long way off can you go see your primary care doctor or even an urgent care doc?
