How important are leaks?

Post by Rainmom17 » Fri Dec 08, 2017 7:32 pm

For the past several weeks, I'm getting reports of leaks on Sleepyhead. I haven't felt or been bothered by these leaks at all. But I'll see data like I'm attaching that shows a percent over the leak redline. Do leaks like this affect my cpap therapy if they don't wake me up?

I have been told leaks are okay if they are small. No mask is perfect. You wont find one. My doc says if your AHI is under 5 you are okay. I am new to this and learning as I go.

If your AHI is reasonable and the leaks do not disturb your sleep, they are insignificant. They should reduce over time.

I don't see any large leaks on that report unless it is so brief and tiny I can't see it on the Events graph.

I think what you are concerned about is the Statistic for % of time over the red line threshold.

You are using a Respironics machine...SleepyHead default the red line threshold number is for a ResMed machine...your red line isn't the same as a ResMed red line.
Let's fix it so the statistic you are seeing is more accurate.

Go to Preferences/CPAP tab and on the right see the red line threshold number of 24....change it to something more appropriate for a Respironics machine...only problem is that Respironics doesn't give us an exact threshold because the threshold varies with pressure variations and the mask used.
Change it to say 60 L/min...it's probably still a conservative number but will be closer to your actual threshold.
Always look over at the graphs....if you have a real large leak as sensed by the machine...it will show up on the graphs as a gray area.
If you don't see a LL flag in the events graph...and no gray areas...you didn't have any large leaks and I don't care what the statistics say.

That said...we all will have large leaks from time to time...as long as they don't wake me up and they don't last a horribly long time...I really don't care.

Any leak (even tiny) that wakes us up....needs to be fixed but more because it is disturbing sleep than impact on therapy.

Leaks look fine and since they are not bothering you, don't worry.
Your minimum pressure is a little too low to prevent many of your events.

Thanks everyone. I didn't think it was a big deal because the leaks don't wake me up. I just wondered because when I put my SD card into my computer and pull up Sleepyhead, it usually has a big warning for me, telling me I had significant mask leaking. Makes it sound dire! But when I look at the data, it's basically just like what I posted. I'll change that setting as you suggested, Pugsy, then maybe the messages to me won't be so dramatic!

I did have a large leak the other night - took me half an hour to figure out one of my mask attachments had come undone. Darn fuzzy night-time brain!
