Multiple machines, DOT compliance

Post by Tommm » Fri Dec 01, 2017 1:36 pm

I tried searching and wasn’t successful, so hopefully someone here can help me out.

I drive a truck in the oilfield and use a CPAP. I hate packing mine up and taking it with me every time I get called out. It’s not the best conditions for a nice machine. I got the chance to pick up a BU machine at what I think is a good price. So now I have 2 machines. When my physical comes around I have to demonstrate compliance. Is there a way to combine 2 SD cards into one report. or just take 2 with me. I have 10 months to get this figured out before my next DOT physical but looking for advice.

If this is covered elsewhere I apologize

It depends on the DOT doc as to what would make him happy but you can combine machine reports (even 2 different machines) under one profile if you use the SleepyHead software. The doc may not be aware of SleepyHead software though and may only trust the ResScan software which is ResMed's official software. If both your machines are ResMed machines they can be combined in one user profile in ResScan software.

If the doc is okay with you furnishing your own report...it's easy to get everything on one report.
He may prefer to generate his own reports though and if that is the case you would just need to get him the 2 SD cards or copies of those cards.

Don't know about the software options? Check this out.

I would take both cards. Can you call the people who will be doing the physical now and pose the question to them? I would think they have dealt with this before. If not, they need to learn!

Yes, you can combine usage reports from multiple machines.
I have done it with both SleepyHead and ResScan.
Easy peasy.

Now whether the doc wants to do his own report or would let the patient bring in their own paper copy...that's something to ask the doc.

If my DOT license depended on it, I would let the medical examiner do it. The medical examiner should be able to do it since he maintains his listing on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. These things do get audited by sampling, and I would not want an audit report to state, "Unusual item: Driver submitted his own CPAP compliance report."

Rules may all be changing soon anyway, on the federal level, it seems:
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulators were drafting a rule to mandate that drivers be screened and treated for sleep apnea, but in August the Trump administration abruptly reversed course. -- November 29, 2017: "Trump Administration Aims To Loosen Obama-Era Truck Safety Rules"

The “company” doc doesn’t have much of a clue and they’re the one that do the DOT physcial but is fine with sleepy head data. He had to google the compliance percentages. I can’t blame him he has a Nutritional and Chiropractor practice and doesn’t do much with DOT physicals regularly

In other words, he's a Quack and we depend on people like this to make it safe for us on the roads. Sigh.

Just take both with, that's what multiple OTR truckers do when they've got a cpap at home, and in the truck... it might be a little more work for whoever to verify compliance (MATH is HARD...) but you can prove you're using it all the time.

it's really easy with SH.. just load both cards into the same profile, SH will combine them.
