Therapy while sleeping or awake

Post by CRMW » Thu Nov 16, 2017 6:54 am

Lately I have been having trouble sleeping and was wondering if any cpap machines can tell when your sleeping or awake and waiting to fall asleep.

It cannot tell if you are sleeping or awake. I too have had this situation..many times. Only you know if you slept.

It can tell because your breathing patterns are different - and so it will react differently, but not usefully.

I think II'm really trying to figure out if the recorded data will show any difference when sleeping or awake.

What data are you looking at trying to decide if awake or asleep?

There are some subtle changes that can be seen and there's also the fact that the machine sometimes will flag awake breathing irregularities as some sort of apnea event.

If you look at your Sleepyhead charts you can usually tell when you fall asleep because respiration rate goes up and tidal volume goes down. Small changes, but definitely noticeable. There will be irregularities as you move or dream.

I don't just wear mine for the fun of it, but, apparently some people do. lol Seriously, my BCBS insurance material addressing cpap coverage WARNS that the insured shall not wear the device while reading, lounging, or for any activity except sleep. They sound pretty ominous about it too. I wondered, is this a big problem in the insurance field? Are there lots of insured people who are wearing their mask for the entertainment value??? I mean, WTH? It really makes me laugh when I think about it. Maybe, I'm missing something. But, anyway, I make sure to curtail my treatment to sleeping hours only. lol

It is an attempt to keep people from gaming the system by wearing it when not sleeping. Seems to be especially common with truck drivers wanting to believe they have no problem but want to keep their CDL.

I believe the insurance industry has an issue with PAP because they cannot directly control the users and make sure they use the equipment. Although the reality is they pay 2 to 3 times or more what the machine should sell for, and most medical procedures zoom quickly past the cost of PAP, so they may be barking up the wrong tree so to say.

All I'm trying to figure out is how long I am actually sleeping at night. I think I initially fall asleep fairly quickly, however when I wake up I keep the mask on while I try and fall back asleep. At time it feels like I spend more time trying to fall back to sleep than actually sleeping but my perceptions can be out of whack when Im over tired.

FYI
- I don't have to report too my insurance company on compliance.
- I don't drive a truck or anything else for a living
- I don't use the equipment for fun
- I assume every one needs to put the equipment on and take it off while awake, At lease I don't know how to do it when i'm sleeping.
