Question for Veteran Mouth Tapers

Post by Comfortably Numb » Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:48 am

In my attempt to get more comfortable with my nasal mask, I began taping my mouth. I've tried both 3M Micropore and 3M "Gentle Release." I've taped horizontally across my lips just beyond each side. As those of you know who've tried it, the micropore is hell to remove.

I tried these tapes three nights in a row with great success. The problem is I've begun to experience some very bothersome symptoms that may or may not be tape related. I have developed a sensation in my right lips, right side of chin, right side roof of mouth, and right sideburn that feels like the latter stages of Novocaine wearing off. Not complete numbness, just that weird almost numb feeling. I quit taping three days ago but the feeling is still there.

Now before anyone suggests that I might have had a stroke or an acoustic neuroma, let me emphasize that I suffer from BPPV, constant tinnitus, and possibly Meniere's disease. I'm under a doctor's care for this. Also, I went to the emergency room yesterday to rule out a stroke. But, I didn't have the balls to tell them I've been taping my mouth at nights.

So let's forget about the doctors for a minute. Have any of you experienced numbness or a similar feeling from mouth taping??

You have a FFM in your equipment profile. Which mask are you actually using?

I've been using tape for a couple years with no issues like you describe. I use Band-aid brand small paper tape. The paper tape is the only one I have found that is easy to remove and just strong enough to keep my mouth shut along with a chin strap.

Did the ER refer you to a neurologist? Unilateral numbness seems unlikely to be related to tape.

Sorry, I go back and forth but I'm sticking with the N20 for as long as possible. Been doing fine without any mouth devices, etc.
