AHI per night with machine

Post by bluemoves » Sat Sep 02, 2017 7:55 am

Hello all. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I have a the Resmed Air Sense 10. I go into the clinical settings to read my sleep report each morning. Originally, my AHI was running .4 - .8 per night. But recently, I've been running 1.1 to 2 per night. I have the Air Sense set on automatic adjustment, which I was told by my respiratory therapist would adjust the pressure all night so I would always have enough to keep my airways open. But if this is so, then why does my AHI get so high each night? Isn't the purpose of the CPAP machine to keep you at 0 AHI? Is that an unrealistic expectation? I could manually adjust the pressure up, I suppose. But then what's the purpose of an automatic setting? Does everyone who uses a CPAP machine maintain a 0 AHI each night?

AHI of 2 isn't "so high"

No. AHI of 0.0 is an unrealistic expectation...nice to see when we get it but to expect it every night is not a realistic goal.

Sometimes the machine can't respond fast enough so we have to help it out with a bit more baseline pressure to give it a better head start.
They don't/can't increase 2 or 3 cm in the blink of an eye. It takes several minutes.

Besides...your AHI could be increased because of centrals or Sleep/Wake/Junk which won't/can't be fixed with more pressure anyway.

No. Most people don't get to see 0.0 AHI very often. I almost had one a couple of nights ago...AHI 0.01.

You need to use the available software to see what the AHI is made up of and see when the events are getting flagged before you start worrying about doing something.
Do you know about the software?

Which model AirSense 10 machine? Model name is clearly noted on the face of the blower.

AirSense 10 CPAP...if you have this model the software won't help you.

Thanks for your reply. I have an AirSense 10 Autoset. Too bad they didn't' give me one for "her." I wonder how it's different from their regular one?

I'll download the software. Hopefully it will be (somewhat?!) easy to figure out how to sync the machine with the software? Thanks again.

I have the For Her AirSense 10 AutoSet.
The only difference is the 3rd apap mode which I am experimenting with right now.
I can see some minor differences but nothing so far that makes me think that it is a critical thing for people to have and try.

I just now look at my report from last night
AHI 3.85 and the night before it was 0.98. Didn't change anything...sometimes we just sleep differently...maybe get more REM where it's common for the OSA to be worse or maybe be on our backs more where it is common for the OSA to be worse.

Now if I saw AHI of 3.85 every night....I would probably look at it more closely but the higher AHI is rare for me...heck about 3 weeks ago I had AHI of 10.2...and I was totally on my side all night. Still scratching my head over that one.

Why would you go into the clinical settings to read your AHI? Isn't it on your screen? If not, ask your doctor to add that feature for you.

I don't think the OP actually means "clinical menu"; but the swtch to turn on the data view is there.
If one is already in the clinical menu, the the feature can be set, and the report screen displays the data.
