My mask dilemma

Post by Rusty Red » Tue Aug 22, 2017 1:34 pm

I have a problem that is not covered by the current supply of masks. I cannot raise my arms above my head and therefore cannot put on soft strapped masks. I have one now that has a metal piece that goes over my head and nasal pillows which I love. I have repaired it several times with duct tape, but would like to have a new one. I cannot find it anywhere. The soft straps do not work because I cannot put them on. The metal is stiff and I can slide it on getting my hands up to my nose. Any ideas as to where I can get a new one? Or, will a company make one again?

Sounds challenging! Ask your doctor for a referral to an occupational therapist. An OT can work with you on an adaptive solution if necessary.

Have you considered a Swift FX with Bella Loops? They go around your ears if you can reach them, no headgear.

OT (Occupational Therapy) and PT (Physical Therapy) are two different things.

good idea
they can come put the mask on him every night

other than that PT is useless and causes more problems than it fixes
it is a scam to suck money out of our wallets and from insurance companies
Respectfully disagree. OT (occupational therapists) would not come and help him put the mask on every night. They will work with him to be able accomplish putting on the mask by himself in a way that works within his physical limitations. I know people for whom OT has been extremely helpful in carrying on normal tasks of daily living when faced with physical limitations.

Also, I respectfully disagree with your opinion on PTs (physical therapists). I'm sorry if that was your experience, as mine was much better. I have found PT to be wonderfully helpful. One time I had pain in my hip coming from a herniated lumbar disc. Working with a PT got me to the point of no pain. Another time was pain in the left side of the back of my head (excruciating at times), left upper back and shoulder blade, radiating down into my left hand. This was from cervical DDD and a few other "neck" things (confirmed by MRI and neurologist tests NCS and EMG). Several months of PT and I ended up pretty much pain free. I'm not saying PT is for everyone or in every situation, but it can definitely be extremely helpful.

Rusty

I use a TAP PAP nasal pillow. It does not sound like the mask you have now, but I think it might otherwise meet your requirements. No need to raise your arms above your head, just put it into your mouth and adjust the screw below your nose.
I find it a great mask for me.

If the previous poster's suggestion for a different mask (great idea!) doesn't work, I also support the Occupational Therapist route. As a person with a neuromuscular disease, I see an OT yearly to find ways to adapt to my progressive disease. She's helped me a LOT over the years. I also support that OTs & PTs are NOT the same thing.

Is the mask that you currently use the Breeze?
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/purita ... llows.html
It's been discontinued fairly just recently. We could maybe look around and see if we could find an old supply of your mask sitting on the shelves somewhere but we need to know for sure exactly which one you are talking about.

I also will suggest that you look at the TapPap nasal pillow mask. I have used it and it works out very well as long as your teeth are good and solid on the top. It can be used without any straps at all.

The Puritan Bennett Breeze Nasal Pillows CPAP mask is back! It's available for a limited time at cpap.com and is sold as a new product as a "Mask Bundle." Those who have liked the "Breeze" in the past might want to check this out. (Also, I don't have any affiliation with cpap.com; this, however, may be a great opportunity for some people.)

The cite sponsor has a nasal pillows mask that may be similar to what you are talking about. It is a re-issue of an older mask design.
