Breath in thru nose out thru mouth

Post by Lantnanajim » Thu Aug 17, 2017 8:18 pm

I breath in thru my nose and sometimes exhale thru my mouth this wakes me up because of the pressure. Chin strap is useless. I have tried full face and nasal pillow. Any suggestions?

Try wearing a firm foam collar - supports your chin/mouth closed. This works for many of us and easy to try.

I was having the same issue and found this on amazon. it holds chin up as well as covers mouth. I roll my lips inward and then cover my lips and it keeps my mouth from opening due to jaw dropping as well as keeps my lips from sputtering air out. May not be for every one but i love it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E5 ... UTF8&psc=1

If tape scares you like it does medical professionals, there are always chin up strips.
Applied correctly, they pull your lower lip up over the upper lip (like a bulldog),
but you can still open your mouth--with a little difficulty.

That's interesting. Does it interfere with your mask? Which model mask do you use?

it doesnt. I use a resmed p10 as well as the nuance pro both nasal pillow masks. I searched long and hard for a solution to keep mouth leaks from happening and I was excited to try this strap and it works. I am still new to using my cpap and have only been using for about 8 weeks. I hate the full face mask. Because of a lot of reasons but my mouth kept sputtering and leaking air causing my ahi to be in the 20's that was not really treating anything. since using this strap and covering my mouth and hooking my nasal pillows in my nostrils my ahi has been under 2.5 so it works and is effectively treating my apnea. I know it is not going to be for everyone but it is not expensive and for me it works and works well. I will say that it smelled a bit like new tires when it came in and i washed it several times with lavender soap and dried it out it smells fine now. worth a shot. I tried taping and it peeled off the corners and leaked air. I woke up choking from the air leak and not realizing i ripped it off. hurt like hell and woke me all the way up. didnt care for that because i had to reapply any time i needed a drink or felt i needed a deep breath through my mouth. with this strap i can just roll it down and do that and put it back. not uncomfortable either.

It should NOT smell like new tires, they weren't that new! Jim

I rarely breathe through my nose due to congestion (despite multiple sinus meds daily) and anatomical reasons.
I read about tape but am worried about suffocating because I so rarely breathe through my nose. Are there any studies on tape for true mouth only breathers?

I have this issue also and am trying many different solutions. One that is working now, and I read it here, so it's not my idea, is a headband. It is not giving me 100% solution but has drastically cut down numbers. Also I can adjust squirrel cheeks
better then when I tried tape.

I did use the tape method and it works quite often, but with my aerophagia, chipmunk cheeks and fear of acid reflux, I am liking the headband solution a little more right now. For me. YMMV.

OP - the only thing besides tape that works for me is the Ultimate Chinstrap (http://sleepapneasolutionsinc.com/). It covers the mouth to provide mouth leaking restriction. Same principle as the product below which I have never seen before. I am ordering.
Thanks

======

sometimes i have to when the machine gets out of sync with me
or tries to force more air in then i can breathe comfortably

sometimes it just blows my mouth open from the pressure

chin strap would force that air to go somewhere else
aerophagia anyone ?
barotrauma anyone ?

in time you can get used to it an not know you are doing it

i would never use a FFM as i need to use that mouth when the machine is going nutzoid with what it is doing and not working with my normal breathng
