At What Point Do You Give Up On A New Mask??

Post by Hammer » Fri Aug 18, 2017 6:02 am

As the title states when do you give up? I got the Amara mask and have not had good success with mask fit. I was originally fitted by the DME with a Medium, but after nights of 19, 76, 50 & 35% mask fit and AHIs over 10 with 2-3 hours sleep, I went back and they fitted my to a Small mask. I have the same issue with mask fit and it seems even the slightest turn of my head causes a leak. If I tighten it I get a headache & pain in my face and still don't get above 75% fit and if I loosen it to make it more comfortable I end up in 20% range for mask fit. I've ripped it off after 3 hours the last few nights.

I am having the very same problem with the Amara View, and I am calling today for an appointment to have it swapped out for something else. I've been using it for about 2 weeks. I don't see much sense in suffering longer than that, especially since the problem is getting worse. This morning I had a frowny-face on my ResMed display for Mask Seal - that's the last straw for me!

I once gave a mask 90 minutes before it was removed to never darken my face again.

Some masks simply don't work well for any number of reasons including just not being good for a person's facial structure.

Time to move on to something else.

Do you have facial hair?
And why working with a full face mask...your profile shows the DreamWear?

I have rejected a mask in as little as 10 minutes.
The "fit" was IMPOSSIBLE.

Sometimes it's a few nights, other times it has been two hours. It depends on the mask and how tolerant I am at that moment.

I currently have a stubble beard, but so short it would not be interpreted as facial hair. My doctor suggested the full face mask as a way to combat the dry mouth with the dreamware. But based on everyone else's suggestions 10-days is plenty of time to know if its going to work or not, so its going away and back to the dreamwear.

I have never had one that was impossible, they had problems, I worked on them, sometimes I found something a little better for me, I then work on them. I never give up, things always change over time. Jim

If the mask does not work, then give up on it ASAP. If it will not work at all, then return it, junk it, or give it away.

Getting the right fit should not be too hard.. you may need to spend 15 minutes, run your machine in "mask fit" mode and try it out

I couldnt use any nasal mask at all at first, but I trained myself to keep my mouth closed and breathe through my nose (mostly by wearing the mask while laying in bed for an hour watching a movie or something). So my masks have changed to where I am trying to use the lightest possible but where it does not leak or disrupt my sleep. Leaks are a problem for me and I can fix that by making the mask tighter. But then I dont like the mask to feel too tight.. I want it to just disappear. I will use a mask such as the P10 which is wonderful but it is too hard to exhale against (and I have a bipap! even at 4cm it is too hard for me). But alas a month ago I was using the P10 exclusively.. so things change. I try it again every now and then to see if it works (i am almost ready to punch some holes in it)

So either decide if the mask has no value to you and stop using it completely or put it away and try again in the future
