Sleep apnea can lead to dementia diagnosis

Post by D.H. » Wed Aug 09, 2017 7:53 pm

This article states that some cases of dementia are caused by SDB and can be reversed with proper treatment.

I don't know how prevalent a diagnosis of "dementia" is in this situation (i.e. the complications of SDB being the only cause of dementia). Dementia is diagnosed mostly in older patients, but sometimes in younger ones too.

Also, I don't know if this is always reversible, as sometimes oxygen deprivation can cause irreversible damage.

Not necessarily so - new brain cells are NOT always created though this was thought to be so years ago.

Check out the posts on this forum from xxyzx, goofproof, palerider and some others. You can readily see that apnea CAN lead to dementia. It is all over this forum!

There does seem to be some logic to the idea of a link between oxygen deprivation and dementia. I am thinking of TIAs, which when enough happen can lead to dementia. If memory serves me, the TIAs short change oxygen to the brain and pathways die off. Probably over simplified.

Dementia in early stages can improve through various treatments, ie speech therapy for aphasia, etc, but I haven't seen anything to indicate long term outcomes are improved.

CPAP treatment that improves quality of sleep, facilitates REM, and allows the brain to do what it's supposed to do at night, should improve brain functions.

The 1 guy who was "cured" is suspect. Has about as much credence, to me, as the friend, who had a friend, who knew somebody who ........

Occasional visitor CaptMidnight here with a comment on an interesting original post and attached article.

There are quite a few scientific studies relating OSA to cognitive impairment, and some to dementia.

Here is the abstract of just one. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25070768

The secondary sequela from OSA are numerous, and one suspects, many are related to inflammation, cognitive impairment included.

http://answers.sleepfoundation.org/prof ... p-can-help

Those of you who have had c-reactive protein measured in blood work taken before beginning, and also after a while on optimized xpap therapy might have noticed a healthy decline in this bad-guy of an inflammation marker.
