How long do machines typically last?
How long do machines typically last?
I have had my ASV machine for a few years now and am thinking about buying an emergency one. How do they usually "break"?

Re: How long do machines typically last?
My ResMed S8 gave up the ghost last Friday after 9 years (29,500 hours).
It pays to keep a prescription on hand. CPAP.com had a new AirSense 10 Autoset at my door Monday afternoon.
ETA: Mine continued to run at minimum setting and would not come up to set pressure. I think after 30k hours it's not worth fixing.

Yeah I am probably at 15,000 hours (estimate) I am getting a bit worried. I guess when I have an appointment with my doctor later this month, I will ask for a script. I forgot, does the script have to have the model of the machine, or can it just state "ASV machine" on it?

Re: How long do machines typically last?
It's always good to have a backup. (Take it from my husband who's machine died while out of town and he didn't have a backup.)
My first machine, a good but straight CPAP, was still working for me a eight years. I bought a new one (APAP this time) two years ago. I did have two backups--that old CPAP and an older-but-low-mileage APAP someone gave me. I only have the the APAP backup now, because I had to give the old CPAP to my husband when his died. So actually, that first CPAP of mine is still working over 10 years later. Now I'm curious and need to check the hours on it. (He still doesn't have a backup, and if something happens, he's not getting my other backup! )
I don't know if the life expectancy of them depends on the type (CPAP, APAP, ASV, etc.).

I don't know. Just to be on the safe side, I speced the "AirSense 10 Autoset with humidifier" and listed the start and target pressures.

@Wearyone
You do raise a point on the type of machine. Since ASV does much more things than a regular APAP or CPAP, many more things within the machine can likely make the machine break faster.
Eh I guess I should look into getting another machine.

Lifespan is unpredictable.
What we know. Is that "Murphy" works when we least expect it.
We should all have a spare.

Re: How long do machines typically last?
There's usually just one model in a brand that has ASV somewhere on it but I think to be safe I would ask for a specific brand and complete official model name. That way there's no chance of a mix up.sleepinow wrote:does the script have to have the model of the machine, or can it just state "ASV machine" on it?
You might look at secondwindcpap.com if you are thinking of buying out of pocket. They have some gently used ASV machines that aren't horribly high priced. They might even have a new open box special. Even their used machines don't have extremely high hours on them because they won't accept any machine with over 2,000 hours on it.

Yeah I will most likely get it from secondwindcpap... It is where I got my current machinePugsy wrote:There's usually just one model in a brand that has ASV somewhere on it but I think to be safe I would ask for a specific brand and complete official model name. Re: How long do machines typically last?
I'm just now over 8k hrs on my first S9. I gained a nearly new backup PR System one when my father passed away, but I happened upon a nearly new (700 run hours) S9 identical to mine on a yardsale forum for $50. Upon inspection, the parts alone were worth twice that and the machine was as new as advertised. So I'm set on backups for a while.
I think machine life may also be affected by the pressure settings used -- I'd think a machine used for 15k hrs at say 6cm might be in better shape than one with 8k hrs at 20, no?

Re: How long do machines typically last?
I bought a new Air Curve S 10 Vauto for a little over half price when a forum member advertised it here on the forum. This will be a back up for my wife and I both.

Re: How long do machines typically last?
My F&P icon lasted from thanksgiving of 2011 to June of 2017. It would still work if the power supply could be reliable. Its built in so it's not an easy swap. Contemplating whether I attempt repair just to have a spare, especially since I bought an air mini for travel and to fill the gap.
Now I have the air mini and an air sense 10.

Re: How long do machines typically last?
Dont buy an emergency one. Make your current one the emergency one and upgrade to a new unit. It is good to have a backup but the backup should be your old machine with years on it. That is how I would do it.
As for the poster with the machine dead while travelling, that really sucks.. i cant travel with two machines (i take too much stuff as it is).. but i can see a machine breaking when travelling with all of the movement carrying it around and such
