I was involved in a similar procedure--just not medical.
After the first couple of hours, I realized that most of the participants were
striving mainly to justify their participation in the group. (and hence their compensation)
I was so disgusted, I snuck out.

Or maybe way back when Global Warming started, the polar bears stopped sleeping in caves, people wintered in cities, to keep from being eaten. Snow became scarce, Black and Decker had made too many leaf and snow blowers, they were converted into XPAP machines, but they found out they had developed a product without a purpose, so they came up with a medical problem (Sleep Apnea) that they could treat with moving air. It then being a medical product, they then had to make up standards on it's use, because we all know how dangerous air is for humans. The industry grew and evolved, We learned to raise and lower the pressure, even pulse it lightly, heat it, and add moisturize it. And everyone in the industry slept well on their profits. Jim
