My tonsils were like that -- My ENT told me they were the largest tonsils he had ever seen - they were overlapping each other. I was a walking zombie and was constantly choking every night. At first my insurance wanted cpap, but the doctor said it wouldn't help due to my tonsils.
I was 32 when they were removed and took me a good two weeks to recover. The difference was night and day -- I finally got some sleep and started dreaming again. I felt more alert and no more falling asleep at my desk.

Being honest, those two weeks of recovery were hell, but I would do it all over again.
That was 17 years ago and since then I have to admit I have gained some weight -- my apnea returned and I am now on CPAP. I am still thankful I had the surgery - I don't know if I would be here today if I didn't.

It does not seem unreasonable that there could be more than one area of the upper airway that is contributing to slap apnea. So sometime there is more than one thing that may need to be done to effect a solution. Congratulations to those who stuck with it and were rewarded with deeper and more restful sleep!

Just an update, I am currently about 3 weeks post op. Maybe it's too early to tell or not, but I've noticed NO improvements thus far. Things could very well be swollen still. Last night my girlfriend tried waking me up because she said I was choking in my sleep. I'm still breathing through my mouth. Even before surgery, I was not "diagnosed" with sleep apnea because I had never got a study done. However, I am scheduled for this Wednesday coming up for a home sleep study. I'm crossing my fingers that i DO have sleep apnea because I'm so over feeling exhausted every single day!!!!

Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy are the treatment of choice for juvenile and teenage patients. Since you're only 21, you're close to the age borderline.

I was more than twice that old when I was diagnosed, so they put me on CPAP. Within two weeks, my chronically red tonsils were pink (and they're still pink 18 year later). Within two months, even the chronic sore on my tonsils cleared up.
