PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
My 3 month old Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto BiPAP went a little crazy last night on startup.
The airflow was much higher pressure than the 3 previous months and the flow out the little Exhaust ports on my Quattro Air mask was very noisy and noticeable.
The startup pressures alternated between 4.5 and 6.0 cmH2O which is normal.
I couldn't get to sleep and turned it off after 2 hours.
In the previous 3 months it operated very, very quietly with only a very slight flow out the exhaust ports.
My AHI has been running a steady 8.0 or thereabouts. Last night it showed 65.7 but I never got to sleep.
Mask Fit runs around 80% and IPAP 90% runs 13.5 and EPAP 90% runs 12.0
This morning I unplugged it several times hoping to reboot the software but no change.
This was a warranty replacement machine.
Does anyone have an idea as to what might have happened?

Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
First of all, why was the last machine replaced under warranty? Was it a problem similar to this one?
Check carefully that all parts are put together just right and there are no leaks. Also, check that the settings have not somehow been altered.

Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
The last one was an identical new PR DreamStation that developed an issue after 18 months.
No changes made in settings.
It sounds and feels like there is a turbocharger booster that has kicked in.
Probably need to take it to supplier next week to get it checked out.
Two year warranty but I don't know whether that applies to a machine already replaced once.

Do you have a marble floor or a marble tabletop?
Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
Strange question but No, it sits on a wooden shelf.

It should be covered under your warranty. I have a ResMed machine, and had to have mine replaced twice. The first one had a faulty cell phone transmitter, and the second one quit working while we were on vacation. Both machines were replaced under warranty.AcedDublB wrote:Two year warranty but I don't know whether that applies to a machine already replaced once.

To me that sounds like a leak, a big leak.AcedDublB wrote:It sounds and feels like there is a turbocharger booster that has kicked in.
Remove the hose from the cpap then turn it on, block the output with a thumb, finger, palm, or whatever. It should quiet right down if there is no leak. If it is still loud feel around for a leak. Many times it is the humidifier chamber which didn't get put back together right.
If the noise is still there and you can't find the leak separate the humidifier from the blower if that is possible on the Dreamstation then turn it on and block the output again.
Hopefully, by this time you've found the problem. To me waiting til next week means you won't be using it all weekend - I know I couldn't do that.
Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
No leaks after performing the various checks you suggested, including removing the humidifier module.
The only thing different last night was I filled the reservoir which I need to do every 3 or 4 nights.
I will try to get to sleep with it running tonight by using earplugs.
Previously this machine has been extraordinarily quiet, so quiet that I need to place my fingers over the mask Exhaust port to ensure it is in fact operating.
My wife remarked last night right away "what has gone run with your machine" as normally she never hears it because it is so quiet.
Thank you for reading my post and making some suggestions.

Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
Take it back.
I have had nothing but trouble with my Dreamstation since I bought it (11mths) and I am about to tell them to take it back again.
I am sick of all the clicking noises.
The humidifier was replaced and then the machine was replaced and still the clicking continues even though it is a new machine.
Frustrating thing is that Philips says it is a known fault in approx 10-15% of machines.

Thank you for confirming some problems with these units.snoozysue wrote:Take it back.

I tried using it again last night but after an hour of laying awake with the noise and high volume of air moving I turned it off.
Back to the supplier tomorrow.
Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
Found the problem thanks to a check by the Technician at the supplier.
She quickly discovered there was a leak in the mask liner (Quattro Air) making the DreamStation work much harder to compensate thereby generating more noise and flow.
Surprised that this wasn't more obvious but I suppose the leak did not appear apparent due to blower noise.
Fortunately not a DreamStation issue.

Re: PR DreamStation Gone Haywire
The question about the marble floor dates back to an experience I had many years ago. The old (physically gigantic by current standards) computer disk drives that worked fine everywhere else simply shook apart when installed on a marble floor. I was just making sure this wasn't the same issue. Didn't think so, but thought I'd ask.AcedDublB wrote:Strange question but No, it sits on a wooden shelf.

Glad you got it sorted out. Seems like removing the hose should have isolated that problem.AcedDublB wrote:Found the problem thanks to a check by the Technician at the supplier.
