Cleaning Questions

Post by kong » Fri May 26, 2017 3:56 pm

I have some cleaning questions:

Mask--I wear a Quattro Full Face Mask. Currently, I buy CPAP wipes and use them every day. Then, every week or two, I'll wash the mask and head strap with liquid soap. Are baby wipes less effective than CPAP wipes? Can I just use a wash cloth with water?

Water Chamber--Assuming I always use distilled water and drain it every day, do I need to do anything to clean the water chamber?

Thanks for your help. Essentially, I want to do enough to stay healthy but i don't want to do extra work.

I question cleaning too, that's why I don't do it if it's not necessary. Jim

=======

the mask is likely necessary
keep body oils from deteriorating the plastic
and clean out potential germs so they dont build up and multiply
wipe it off every morning with eyeglass cleaning cloth or microfibre towel
use something stronger to kill germs once a week
guy upstairs uses hydrogen peroxide
dont know if that is approved but he has done that for years
or use some sort of scentless odor free wipes

the hose is iffy
but easy enough to run water through it
which is all my DME said it needed once a week
I always pay attention to DME's, they are so Tuned Into the facts. If your germs were that deadly I wouldn't let you in my house. I have a dresser drawer full of new XPAP supplies and parts, if the mask gets too oily, I pu t it in a pan and pop popcorn. I'd squeeze them out and save them for my next truck service. Jim

Kong: go to Walmart and buy the Pampers wipes for sensitive skin. They are about $1.80 or something like that. They have no alcohol or aloe (tho' they have aloe juice). I like them better than cpap wipes. Wipe them down on the schedule you have.

Any baby wipe would work just fine. We do not empty our water chambers every day. We top them off every night, and then wash them with soap and water about once a month, if I think of it. I wash the head piece and strap pads when I wash out the water chambers. The hoses never get washed out unless one of us gets sick, then we will soak the hose in a diluted vinegar solution and wash it with soap and water.

If your immunity is normal, you can work primarily on visible soil, or what you can feel, smell, etc.
Anything beyond that should be based on verified risk or the patient's own mental state.

Yeah, I know. I think I read the same label.
I get the generic, because I figure there is LESS aloe--(likely next to none)
Just because they are CHEAP.

I wash the mask when I know I have drooled, when it is very warm and my face has sweat, and if my Large Leak is higher than zero %.

My current routine: mask wipes once a day.. takes 30 seconds. I dump the distilled water in the morning and add fresh water at night. Every now and then I will clean the hose and give the mask a good cleaning with dawn soap.

It is all personal preference.. I think anything more than this is a waste of time. Cleaning the hose and drying is time consuming.. and I dont know if there is anything disgusting in there since the air only blows one way. I think whatever nasty stuff is in my hose is in my machine and I am not tearing that thing apart to clean it??

I don't mind hearing about people that dont do anything. If you don't care about how the mask feels, then dont clean it. I dont think there is anything unsafe if you never clean your equipment. The water chamber: I just dont care about losing 5 cents of distilled water so I dump it because it makes me feel good knowing my water is fresh.. and if my water chamber became gross and slimy I would not do the vinegar thing or scrub it.. just buy a new one.. i dont think it can be more than $30 although I havent looked.
