Starting over with CPAP- New Guy and story!

Post by JimmyB1983 » Fri May 26, 2017 5:07 pm

Hey Everybody,

I am dignosed with Sleep Apnea and Hypersomnia . I am one of those guys where the wife runs away to other room with how bad he snoring was!! Always been a Mouth Breather, and seems like last 3 to 5 years is where it has really affected me.
Moved to East TN from CT fall of 2016. The transition of moving for first time, Mother just passing and finding a job really affected health and quality of life with the sleep disorder. It has caused issues of forgetfulness , some long term memory, alertness and so on. I am looking for any help and advise I can get . This has totally changed my life but i am doing whatever I can to turn it around and have this totally under control and go back to living life!

I currently have ResMed Airfit elite 10 machine . AirfitF20 mask. ( Full Mask and chin strap ..... yup, makes not much sense but my guy keeps telling me I need too!) This sleep disorder has caused some aniexty for me so I do take tamzapam before bed and nuvigil in morning, eeps you more alert & focused. I still have issues of not being able to keep thoughts in check before bed and races at night. I fall asleep fine and my wife says " never have seen someone fall asleep fast as you do!" Hahaha-

**Main issue is staying sleep and sometimes the nuvigil does not work that well and is only
performs good if sleeping "okay". My sleep hygiene is much better but still can be better for sure! I have changed my diet and lost some weight which helps me feel little better. ( about 185). I am looking to switch to another sleep center as mine
Is very much about the money and found that out first hand today.... Any advice, resources anybody provides is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Jim B

Hi, I wonder when you last tried things without the Nuvigil for any length of time beyond 1-2 days when the effects might still be around. If you're properly treated on Cpap (not saying you are yet) you shouldn't need the Nuv. And if you really feel you do, even taking all your transitioning into acct, maybe we could help you get Cpap therapy optimized. Have you downloaded (free) Sleepyhead software? There are instructions re DL'g it and posting the reports (onto another site because of graphs) which you'd then link to this thread and we can help interpret things. A lot can go on overnight so it's a good idea to at least get a look and then we might advise re tweaking pressures or whatever.

Hello and welcome. You'll find help here in overcoming obstacles with treatment as/if you run into them. The first thing will be to be sure your settings are working effectively. I'll just comment on the sleep issues. Not sure if it would work for anyone else as I had additional sleep disorders to address (periodic limb movements), but I found the key to calming my mind was softly playing oldies while I slept. Loud enough to hear the words a bit without straining but not any louder. Playing nature sounds or soothing music didn't help me. With oldies of a genre peasurable to me, my mind had continual input to help it not wander, but the words were so familiar I didn't need to be alert to follow them. You might want to try it just to see if it helps you. Not sure how long you've been on CPAP, but hopefully after being treated for a while you'll get comfortable with the new sensations and be able to sustain sleep and begin to feel more rested. In the meantime, consider things like medications for possible side effect of sleep disruption. Be patient with yourself and your treatment. You didn't get like this overnight and recovery is usually a process, but you have every reason to be optimistic about regaining your life.

Hello, I am starting over too. As a matter of fact, I just got done washing my hoses and such and setting it up to use tonight.
It has been a couple of years 3? Since I have used mine regularly.
I think the tip above to listen to some music is a good idea. Something without words might work best for me. Wonder if Amazon music can be put in a timer.

Good luck to you!

I've also heard about a web site where a guy kind of makes up long, boring stories that help people go to sleep. Sounds odd, but there was a review that I heard about it online...unfortunately, there are a few of these sites listed on Google search, and I don't remember the specific one. But it makes sense to me, and would be more likely to work for me than music for getting to sleep.

Good luck, hope that things improve for you!

Shoot, all you have to do is get into a chat room with me and that will happen. Never thought to try and make a profession on being boring.
