Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
I have lost several teeth due to CPAP and am wondering if anyone has had the same affect.

First time I have ever heard of that.

Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
Can you please elaborate? Exactly how did this happen?
Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
I used to use a mask that put pressure on my lower jaw line and I lost three teeth after about 3 years, so I went to a nasal mask which put pressure on my upper lip and after about 2 years, I lost my two front teeth, so in total I've lost 5 teeth due to using the masks.

I can see a mask causing problems like this. The only way I can wear my mask at a higher pressure is to wear it very tightly. Only way to keep it from leaking.
Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
Some of my posting got cut off, but I wanted to tell you that the mask I am using is no longer being sold, but I found another mask that I think would work well for you it is called the The Breeze Nasal CPAP Mask with DreamSeal Assembly by Puritan Bennett. Hope this works well for you. I like it because there are no straps on your face to leave marks.

Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
I was started out with a mask that was causing my upper incisors to shift backwards.
My teeth would return to the correct position by noon, but I got my doctor to write a letter
to indicate that I HAD TO change masks as soon as possible.
The letter was enough to override the silly wait period inflicted by the insurance company.
I knew the mask was bad for my teeth within a few weeks, and knew I had to change--so I did.
EDIT: In my case, I had orthodontics decades ago, therefore, I was familiar with the sensation of shifting teeth.
(Just in case anyone wants to fault the OP for ignoring "obvious" symptoms)

Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
Mask sizes are approximate, and this would be unlikely with a PROPERLY FITTING mask, but alas!
Many of us are between sizes on certain models, and RT's lack either the training or the motivation to
ensure that EVERY patient is wearing a mask that REALLY FITS.
The Mirage Micro that I had to ditch was a shade too large for me--and my first mask, ever.
Stupid RT pushed that mask on me, but lost our business forever..

I'm thinking your teeth may have been in poor shape to begin with, if so can you really blame CPAP?heyjude722 wrote:I have lost several teeth due to CPAP and am wondering if anyone has had the same affect.

It sounds like you made the mask way too tight!
Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
And possibly have undiagnosed osteoporosis to boot. If a mask needs to be so tight, you should look for another one, get fitted properly, try FFMs on while lying down because your face changes then, etc. etc.

Re: Has anyone lost teeth due to CPAP
Interestingly (or not!) I had a "dead tooth" in front for 4 decades. From a childhood accident most likely, it was darker and a couple of dentists asked me why over the years.
2 years ago I changed masks to Nuance pillow and after a month or so I started getting a pain way up in my gums above that tooth. Just slightly painful but there, and really only when touched...by the mask.
After a few days I switched masks but the pain continued, and eventually increased overy the couse of a few months. The dentist reminded me of the "dead tooth" and said it was time for a root canal. The root canal solved the pain after a week or two, but the tooth was gone and needed a cap.
Coincidence? Mask caused it? Picking up the trumpet? Just one of those things?
Who knows. Interesting to think about but I don't blame the Nuance.

I'd say the childhood accident caused it, the mask probably just flagged what was already an issue.RonS wrote:
