Uh, taking antidepressants to deal with the stress of a new job does not mean that someone has a mental problem.

Also, many people on psych meds smoke to deal with the sedating effects. Of course, I can't assume that is what is happening with the OP's partner but just trying to provide a perspective you hadn't thought of.

Please quit. I smoked, and it took getting the wind knocked out of me, from a colon spasm to get me to quit.
Could hardly breath, lasted a week.
Didn't like the feeling of not being able to breathe.

He started with 2 a night, then 6,sorry but soon the more stressed you get the more one will smoke.
Possible it will be one pack a day after a while.
Something isn't going tight, a smoker will keep grabbing the pack and lighting them.
This is 1st. Hand experience
Again, I didn't like not being able to breathe!

EDIT
I re-read the above statement, This AM, The statement/thought............ "What's it going to take" ?
I was directing toward the man smoking through a Trake(sp?)
Didn't mean to sound Harsh toward your husband.

My apologies for the Gravity Bong comment, maybe it was a fan assisted vaporizer and amusingly enough (to me) the vaporizer review is at https://quitsmokingcommunity.org/vapori ... r-reviews/

But as far as him sleeping with his mouth open he will need to address that before he can get adequate treatment from his machine or switch to a full face mask. it is possible that his pressures are to low to start and is air starved so he opens his mouth. But without pressure data or sleepy head graphs this is pure speculation.

Short term the smoking is probably unrelated to the open mouth and snoring. Long term he found a reason to start he will need to find his own reason to quit. Getting his apnea under control will remove one of his stresses making quitting easer, if that is what he wants to do.

I don't know if they are putting the cigarette in air intake of their PAPs and then go to sleep, but I have seen some wicked tarred up machines. The tar caked sensors and blower fans, very very nasty to deal with. On the old Respironics legacy PAPs if they came in really tarred up the mounting holes on the lids would become brittle and usually cracked when you try to remove the screws. Cigarette tar makes plastic brittle

PLEASE, get him to quit, NOW! I started smoking at age 16, and quit at age 37. I am now 73, and although I quit back in 1981, I have had 3 pneumothorax, have asthma and COPD. My mother smoked, and passed away at age 62 from lung cancer AND congestive heart failure. I can not emphasize how important it is NOT to smoke.

While I agree smoking is no good for your health some of those health problems are caused by undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea. The bottom line is even absent a smoking history one can encounter some of those health problems.

I would say the opposite - Smoking, even one smoke, can irritate the airways causing them to swell slightly. The swelling can cause snoring and mouth opening.

I quit smoking before I started CPAP. AHI numbers were fab and felt great. Slipped up on smoking. Stupid. My AHIs went way up so on the cigarette wagon again. So yes, smoking very much affects OSA therapy.

Yes it is. Why did you blank out . and .?
it's a little app on firefox (foxreplace) that replaces words, probably designed as a 'dirty word filter', I put some of the more egregious usernames from my foe list in there, so I'm less tempted to peek at their vitriol, and thus get sucked into another exchange of stupid.

Yes, Pale Rider, it probably looks ridiculous from your POV. But if you knew how much I enjoy smoking ... it's worth some years whacked off at the end of my life.
