new cpap user, weird mouth thing happening

Post by eileenurbanic » Tue May 16, 2017 4:29 pm

Hi----I just started using a nasal cpap a few days ago, still adjusting to everything. A couple of times during the night I have experienced a large amount of air escaping from my closed mouth. Once it woke me up, which is not ideal. Has this ever happened to anyone, do you know why it's happening?? Any advice or information is welcome. Thank you.

This is very common. You are using either nasal pillows or a nasal mask and our mouth is opening while you sleep. Please register on the forum and list your equipment. Then, people will be able to offer advice.

You can seal off the mouth from the rest of the airway by learning to sleep with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, on that ridge just behind the front teeth. This will stop the mouth from filling up with air.

It's not as hard as it sounds to learn to do this when you sleep. Practice ALL DAY--if you are not eating or talking, that's where your tongue should be. It does become second nature after a few days. This isn't 100% but works well for most people.
