STIFF BACK AFTER SLEEPING W/ CPAP

Post by Ann C. » Sat May 06, 2017 6:08 am

Hello everyone,
I am new to this community and am now using a CPAP. I am 50 years old and stop breathing about 62 times per hour.
I have experienced a stiff back and spasuming muscles after my sleep. I think it is because of now not waking up as much as before therefore sleeping in a STILL position for many hours.
Has anyone experienced this and will it adjust????

I have experienced it also.
Stiff yes, spasms rarely thankfully.
For me a drink of water helps.
Gatorade helps more.
Walking if possible helps quite a bit.
Heating pad helps quite a bit.
Once in a blue moon if its particularly bad I take 1x Gravol.

Were you sleeping all tensed up in one position all night, too aware of being on Cpap? Not the first to say so, but it should pass unless something unrelated is going on.

Have you changed your sleeping position since using cpap? Have arthritis or any spinal cord injuries? Herniated disc or pinched nerves?

Could it be time for a new bed?

Hi, Ann. Welcome to the forums. We encourage you to register and add your equipment. It helps us to know you and help you better.

I'm about 3 months into my CPAP therapy and went to the physical therapist yesterday for this very issue. In my case, I know for a fact that it's because I will sleep on one side without turning over for up to 6 hours at a time. I sleep on my side on a home-made CPAP pillow that has a cut-out for my mask. If I move out of that position, it moves the mask off my face and causes leaks - it also lets the air pressure escape, which kinda ruins the therapy and means I won't breathe.

So my mind is over-riding my body's natural tendency to move while I'm sleeping: moving means not breathing, and not breathing is NOT an option. Therefore I will not move (unless I wake up - then I can deliberately move into a new position that will not move the mask off my face).

That's my story, at least. I hope it helps you on your journey.

Ed

Or it could be...I got a sore back the first month, I think it was from changing sleeping positions during sleep that I wasn't use to. I move more in bed now. I think subconsciously I slept on my side and didn't move before cpap. As I choked less there.
