eyes swollen

I have been using cpap since Dec 2016. Didn't start using it for 4 hours or more until 02/17 . On 03/17/17 both of my eyes were swollen. I went to the eye doctor the following Monday, he examined my eyes and gave me eye drops. The next Monday went back and he gave me more drops and cream. Still swollen, went to different eye dr. 04/18, she couldn't find anything and when I finally said I have been using cpap she said that was causing it. She gave me an antibiotic cream to put in corners of my eyes. Still swollen. I went to the sleep doctor on 04/24/17, they checked my mask and said my mask is not leaking, my report for the last 30 days shows no air leaks so they are saying its not the mask. I go back to eye dr 05/03. Any ideas.

My first thought is that your mask is leaking and the escaping air is leaking into your eyes and drying them out.

The second thing I think of is environmental allergies.

You didn't say what mask you are using. Assuming that you are using a nasal or full face mask (that covers the bridge of your nose), the mask cushion could be restricting some blood circulation and causing swelling around your eyes. You could try using a nasal pillow type mask instead?

Better yet, you should consider registering as a forum member so that you can fill out your profile to list your CPAP equipment so that other forum members can better help you.

My brother gets swollen eye area when he doesn't use his sleep mask. He uses a Walgreens Sleep mask (blue) for about $8. It cups over the eyes so it doesn't press on them. Try that. If leaks are at issue, this should help. Note: takes some figuring out how to place the sleep mask depending on what mask you are using. You just don't want it under the mask because it will break the seal increasing leaks.

Just because the report says no air leaks doesn't mean there aren't any. Resmed, for instance, only reports LARGE leaks. Not sure what Respironics reports. Small leaks can certainly cause the problems you are having.

xxyzx, he's had his mask since December, so if he were chemically sensitive to it, it would have shown up earlier even though he was using it for shorter periods. It also wouldn't just be the eye area inflamed.

Since the swelling occurred a month after you started using the CPAP more than 4 hours, and used it without swelling for months before that. I'd say you have something other than the CPAP going on. Any other allergic symptoms? How about laying off the CPAP totally for a few days and see if the swelling goes down?

seems like many things made in japan that could be labelled plastic have bad odors emanating

he may have cleaned the mask and those chemicals are bothering him

it could be air blowing but chemicals is definitely possible
especially if that mask had been made in china

I just came up to NYC for a few days of work and my eyes almost look like Rocky Balboa. Huge bags under my eyes. I have a dreamwear mask and can hear the are constantly leaking now. I almost went to the emergency room because I didn't know what it was but for the second day in a row when I've woken up it's worse so I think it's the cpap or mask. Feeling kinda nervous

Is the mask leaking or is this the air from the exhaust vents?

Here are some tips:

To reduce unintentional mask leak -

- Make sure the mask is fitted properly. (See mask manufacturer's video.)

- Make sure the headgear is adjusted properly (See mask manufacturer's video.)

- If you use a low ramp pressure or a low minimum pressure, you should fit and adjust your mask at the higher pressures it is operating at for most of the night. You would temporarily change the machine pressure settings while you do the fitting and adjusting. It's best to do this well before bedtime before you are tired and ready for sleep. Don't forget to change your settings back to the ones you prefer.

- Make sure to use good hose management - the hose should not pull on the mask. Notice how your hose is positioned between machine and mask. It should be positioned to minimize any pull on the mask. Hose management is an individual practice. How it is done depends on the mask, the position of the machine, your sleeping position and other factors specific to the individual.

- If you still have problems, learn from the forum what mask liners are available.

- Start a thread in cpaptalk asking for help. Subject: Need Help with Mask xxxxxx

- If your mask still has excessive leak, try other masks. Many people report trying several masks before they find one that works well for them.
