Auto on feature

Post by G18 » Fri Apr 21, 2017 9:11 am

I have a Phillips respironics remstar c pap machine and it has an auto on feature that is ssuppowd to turn on when you breath into your mask but mine rarely works. Does anyone have any insight into why it does not work all the time or what I am doing wrong in the time it does not work? Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

My provider left that setting off when setting up the unit, and I understand why. I enabled Auto-On to try it, and found it to be kind of sketchy. To ensure that it turns on, my mask must be sealed well in order for the unit sense the back pressure and turn on (the Amara View requires pretty good pressure to seal properly). For that kind of effort, it's easier to hit the start button...works every time.

G18,

What kind of mask are you using? And what is your starting pressure?

The AutoOn feature can be problematic with nasal pillows masks.

And AliClick points out, it's usually not that hard to hit the on/off button.

My husband and I have had several Respironics machines. None of them worked consistently with the Auto On/Auto Off feature. We finally just turned them off to save aggravation.

If you do not have a good mask seal the cpap may not sense you breathing to turn ON the Auto Start feature. So check your mask seal. Mine works with nasal pillows every nite.

The feature may not fully turn of as the machine checks to see if the user has fingers, if it counts to ten it shuts off.

Masks pressure vary because of leaks and other things, your breathing may be too weak to trigger it, it cost nothing to turn it on, and it sure won't work if you turn it off.

Feel free to get some exercise, take one finger and push the start button, it has a higher success rate. Jim

DO NOT turn the Auto Shut Off, on! Shallow breathing might trigger the machine to stop! Bad Idea!

I use the Autostart feature on a Resmed 10 Autoset and it works flawlessly and I really like it.

We MIGHT be able to offer some suggestions if we knew exactly which specific generation and model of machine you were using AND which mask you're using. (Sounds like it might be one of the "System One" generation machines)

If you're using a nasal mask and are inconsistent about how hard you exhale into it, that MIGHT account for some of what you describe. Sometimes, even with a full face mask, they can be somewhat temperamental.

I turned mine off. The auto on was too sensitive. It would often start before I had the mask fully hooked up, and the auto off would not work half of the time. It's easier to just use the on/off button.

iirc it takes at least 60 seconds for the auto off works.

I agree with that. The Circadiance 3d mask I'm trying now is difficult to start with autostart, so I just hit the on button.
