Is sleep apnea always "loud"?

Post by reastlack » Tue Apr 11, 2017 7:38 am

Out of curiosity, does sleep apnea have to be loud? Can you have sleep apnea, have pauses in breathing, but not LOUD noises of catching my breath?

I am within a week! I have all the symptoms. However, when I record myself sleeping, I've caught myself taking DEEP breaths at some points, but never loud obnoxious snoring/snorting or any noises.

Snoring is not a mandatory condition of sleep apnea. In fact, I am pretty sue that it is not possible to snore during a central apnea event.

Often, there is the deathly silence when your loved one is NOT BREATHING AT ALL.
Terrifying!

Yes, and during an obstructive apnea event no air is moving. Air has to move to cause snoring.

I have not snored since I had UPPP surgery in either 1996 or 1997. When tested two years ago, I had severe OSA. You can have flow restrictions that are severe enough to lower your blood oxygen levels without waking up and making loud gasping sounds.

Thankyou! As bad as it may sound, I'm HOPING my doctor tells me I have OSA. I want an answer for my extreme fatigue!

As already pointed out Central Apnea is completely silent. Obstructive Apnea is usually noisy, but not always. Also, Obstructive Apnea can be silenced because of certain surgeries.

I felt the same way. I did get a diagnosis of OSA, I did get a APAP, and it did help me feel so much better and actually awake for the first time in 40 years.
