Resp rate question

Post by bmanley » Thu Mar 23, 2017 10:20 am

I'm guessing the resp rate listed in sleepyhead is the rate we are breathing at. Does anybody know how accurate it is? Would say the 95% reading is the average over the night. If this is true it seems like I'm breathing too fast for being asleep. Most nights the 95% area shows around 20 and low of 12 which is what I would think it should run. The MAX runs from 30-42 over the last two weeks. Is this normal or am I breathing too fast during the night? Maybe it is just something messing with the reading. Or does using a CPAP cause us to breath a little faster?

I don't know how accurate SH is or when the sampling is done to calculate the rate.
Respiratory rate isn't something that ResScan shows so I have never been able to verify the SH results.
CPAP doesn't make you breathe faster. It is not a ventilator forcing you to breathe. There are machines that will breathe for you if you aren't breathing but yours isn't one of them.

In general I don't worry about the respiration rate...like what are you going to do about it anyway.
Maybe some of the increased rate is from a dream...like a bad dream or something.
And all that is assuming that what SH is reporting is accurate. I have my doubts on the accuracy when I see respiratory rates that are excessively high.

Thanks. Just trying to figure out why I toss and turn so much but don't notice it other then still tired in the morning. And the video. Only reason I ask about the machine was I didn't know if having the little bit of pressure would make you breath faster just because it might be helping. As a firefighter if you use an airpack very long it can make your lungs hurt a little but this is because it is putting pressure on them with every breath.
I do think pain is my main reason for all the moving and I saw my pain doc yesterday and we have RF setup for my lower back. This will not happen for about a month for the first one and a few weeks later for the other side. Takes a few weeks to feel the relief from it so it will be a bit before I can see if this helps. Just hope I can figure this out and get some better rest.

Thanks for the link that helps.
For the rate I was wondering if that could point to pain being a part of the restlessness and the higher rate being because of it. It's normal to think your rate will show down as you sleep but being in pain you would think it could cause that rate to be higher then normal. And you are right there is not much you can do about it, but I think it could help me to understand my issues. I have my nerve burning dates set and a surgery coming up in about a month and a half so it's not going to be a normal time for a while.
