Why does this lower my AHI

Post by stcrim » Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:57 am

I have posted some about this in the past but now really want to know why this lowers my AHI so dramatically. I cut two small pieces of 3M waterproof tape and punch a 4.5mm hole in each. I place each piece of tape over a nostril where the 4.5mm hole is about in the center. Once done I am effectively breathing through two small 4.5mm holes. I also tape my mouth shut.

My pressure should be 11 to 15 but with the above I can use a pressure as low as 4 and have an AHI below 1.0 and usually below 0.5 The 2 or 3 events that do occur are usually hyponeas or CA's.

That same pressure without the above and my night is riddled with obstructives and the breathing pattern is all over the board.

What is it about breathing through those small holes that allows me to drop my pressure so low?

Probably because what you are doing is causing some sort of back pressure that tends to help hold the airway open.
Probably like the way the Provent things on the nostrils would work for some people.
The small amount of back pressure added to the cpap pressure is enough to hold the airway open.

You might read up on how Provent was reported to work for the mechanics of it.
