Newbie, changed mask and now mouth is dry

Post by bunnypoo » Tue Mar 21, 2017 9:44 am

I've had my C-pap less than a week, I have a F&P Icon +. The respiratory therapist offered me a few masks and I chose the Dreamwear because the hose attached to the top. However, I'm a side sleeper and every time I rolled over the mask would move away from my nose and shoot air all over the place. I tried to tighten it and ended up with a sore and a bruise under my nose. I tried it for 5 nights and I was so exhausted from waking up to air blowing in my face that I went back and got the AirFit P10 for her mask yesterday. Once I fell asleep last, I don't recall waking up to adjust the mask or any interruptions at all, I think. (After 5 days of not sleeping, I was a little foggy.) But my throat was incredibly dry this morning and still feels a little rough 4 hours later. Also, after I took off my mask, I felt like I forgot how to breath for a few minutes, like I had to remind myself that I need to breathing in and out. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong with this mask or if I need to get used to it. I downloaded SleepyHead to see if I could see what might have been different about last night to cause my throat to be so sore but I'm not quite getting it. I was hoping for some help.

Here are my readings for the last three nights. Is there anything from last night that could indicate a change?

You likely were mouth breathing a bit which causes the mouth to dry out.
From the leak graph it doesn't look like there was any huge leaks going on which would point to massive mouth breathing affecting the therapy itself.

For some reason some people just get the old dry mouth thing much easier than other people for any number of various reasons. Sometimes they take medications that tend to dry out the body. Sometimes they just have the bad luck to have a mouth that dries out super easy. My mouth dries out super easy...maybe 5 minutes of mouth breathing will do it.
It's not enough to seriously impact my therapy but it sure is annoying when it happens.

A dry throat is a sign that your mouth was not sealed.

You need to practice sealing your tongue to the roof of your mouth. It's a bit difficult for me to describe. kinda like sucking your tongue into the indentation in the soft palate, or the preparation for clicking your tongue without the click part. Practicing the tongue seal during the day will reinforce using it while you sleep.

I just noticed that the min pressure was set to 5cm. With the P10 I feel claustrophobic or air starved when the pressure is that low. I am much more comfortable with a min pressure of 7cm. With the lower pressures the machine doesn't push all of the expelled breath out the vent and I rebreath it.
