BiPAP as Back Up Machine

Post by Holden4th » Mon Mar 20, 2017 3:14 am

I am looking at getting a back up machine after I come back from my UK trip. After doing a lot of reading I am thinking of getting a BiPAP. My PRS1 560 Auto does not seem to be able to bring my RERAs down below 2.00 on a regular basis and I believe that BiPAP is a good way of achieving this.

I'll buy used of course and am vacillating between two different machines. The big point is that both can be used as a straight APAP.

The Respironics PRS1 DS760 auto is at a good price from Supplier #2 and has some good features

The Resmed S9 VPAP/BiPAP auto is even cheaper from suppler #2 and is also a strong contender

The dichotomy for me is do I stick with Respironics or do I open myself up to a different algorithm by getting the Resmed and therefore spread my bets.

Are there other alternatives?

All advice gratefully received.

My advise has always been when choosing a backup to stick with one brand for a number of reasons.
  • You are already familiar with the algorithm
And how to navigate the menu
And if you choose the same Generation not only will the filters fit but the power supply and humidifier will interchange should they be needed.
Then there is the Battery power cord or adapter if you have one you can use it on either.
Stranger things have happened.

I'd ask, "why do you think a "bilevel" (not bipap) (and I'm guessing that "supplier 2" is secondwind since i've seen them incorrectly labeling the S9 vpap auto as a "bipap", but it's not more a "bipap" than a holden is a ford, for precisely the same reason),would give you better sleep?

I use the s9 vpap auto, and think it's a superior machine for a number of reasons, including the fact that it's more responsive. however, it doesn't attempt to guess at reras, like the respironics machine does, so right there, you'll get no reras flagged.... but you might have a lower AHI and better sleep.

Pros and cons to either way.

How bad is the curiosity itch to try out the ResMed way of doing things?
How much does the "what if" bug eat on you? Like "what if" I feel better with the ResMed way of doing things?

Having owned both (ResMed and Respironics) brands in the auto bilevel (the 750 and the 760 PR S1 as well as the S9 VPAP Auto)...will share this. I got better numbers with the ResMed but slept fine and felt fine (meaning the same) with either brand. I don't go by numbers though...I go by how I feel and how I sleep because that's the most important thing to me.
The "what if" bug bit me pretty bad so I scratched the curiosity itch.
So in terms of numbers, the ResMed way of doing things seemed to maybe edge out the Respironics ever so slightly but when comparing how I slept/felt...it was a toss up. Of course like with anything else cpap related...it comes with a really big YMMV sticker.

The points above are valid. I have a somewhat different perspective, probably relating to my ADD personality and wanting to explore new things.

I would try a different company so you would know if you prefer their recipe. Either way, it will probably be a small difference between the two and if the back-up suits you better then you can consider Resmed for your primary machine in the future. If not, you've answered the question and only have to use a marginally less effective machine on a part-time basis.

I'm a Resmed guy, but 10 years ago or so I tried a Respironics auto at the recommendation of my Dr. Apparently Resmed does a poor job of marketing to my local research university med center and the docs there recommend Respironics and don't support Resmed (can't bring in Resmed SD card and have them download it....pretty weak on their part, imo). Anyway, I tried Respironics and its algorithm did not suit me as well. Sold in on here to Liam (not sure if he is around still).

+1

Because he can say whatever he wants and he gets away with it.

I didn't come around for a few weeks and just saw this today. It's always the same thing, same people, and it's never going to be any different.

And all because this person didn't put an 'i' in supplier, thus spelling it "suppler". Purpose of calling the person out?? No less using the 'F' word??

People with bipolar disorder often have cycles of elevated and depressed mood that fit the description of "manic depression." When a person's illness follows this classic pattern, diagnosing bipolar disorder is relatively easy.

But bipolar disorder can be sneaky. Symptoms can defy the expected manic-depressive sequence. Infrequent episodes of mild mania or hypomania can go undetected. Depression can overshadow other aspects of the illness. And substance abuse, if present, can cloud the picture.

Taken together, these factors make bipolar disorder difficult to diagnose when symptoms are not obvious. A few facts about bipolar disorder you may not know:

As many as 20% of people complaining of depression to their doctor actually have bipolar disorder.
About half of people with bipolar disorder have seen three professionals before being diagnosed correctly.
It takes an average of 10 years for people to enter treatment for bipolar disorder after symptoms begin. This is caused in part by delays in diagnosis.
Most people with bipolar disorder have additional psychiatric conditions (such as substance abuse or anxiety) that can make overall diagnoses more challenging.

Nobody is "defending" it.
He just stretches the limits of the 1st Amendment.......and drives off some visitors and forum members in the process.

Both Pugsy and Jedimark among others have defended him. Tho Mark wised up and fired him. It is a violation of the User Agreement and has nothing to do with Free Speech. Someone needs to let Johnny know and bring some civilization to this forum.

I'm sure they know.
This forum has been the "wild west" since its beginning.
It was a pretty good place for many years.
