Fatigued

Post by Katlee39 » Wed Mar 15, 2017 3:41 pm

Hi, I've been using an apap resmed airsense 10 with the Amara View mask size Med. My ahi was 14.4 before treatment. Now between 1-3 ahi. No leaks. Sleep about 7 hrs a nite with a few awakenings. I have what they call dyssomnia. I can fall asleep but cant stay asleep. I rarely feel rested anymore.

As a first step, here is a checklist to review for areas that need improvment:
- Practice good sleep hygiene (Google it and read several sources)
- Eat a good diet
- Have a regular, moderate exercise program
- Try to avoid daytime naps
- Practice total abstinence of caffeine including sources like chocolate (sigh)
- Review all medicines, vitamins and supplements you are taking to make sure none are interfering with sleep
- Use the bedroom for sleeping (and sex) only, and make sure the bedroom and bed are comfortable.
- Learn to appropriately handle emotional stress in your life
- Do not listen to your breathing or the sound of the machine as you are falling asleep.
- Distract your mind by thinking of a pleasant, relaxing activity that you enjoy. Thinking of sitting under an umbrella on a quiet beach with a warm gentle breeze works for me.
- Use CPAP software, such as the free SleepyHead, to make sure your therapy is optimized
- If you still don't feel or sleep well, make sure you have regular medical checkups to confirm there are no other medical problems

Definitely, continue the treatment.

Also, contact your sleep doctor (or the doctor who prescribed the machine). (S)he can evaluate your case and if medications will help.

Your AHI is considered good, but even lower is even better. Unlike blood pressure or blood sugar, your AHI cannot go too low.

Any chance you are taking any meds or supplements prone to causing sleep fragmentation?
You don't by any chance happen to have RLS?

What are your settings? It may be that some of the data gurus here could spot something needing optimized if you posted your machine data. On a night your AHI is 3, in 7 hours of sleep you will have had 21 events. Even in sleep studies we see that a percentage of events will result in arousals. If just a few of those 21 events resulted in you waking up, optimizing your settings to get your AHI even lower could theoretically give you better continuity of sleep.

My auto machine goes from 5 to 20. I usually hover between 8-9.
I take 1mg. Ativan at bedtime to help me relax to sleep.
