Heated Hose uses Twice the water
Heated Hose uses Twice the water
Mid last year i had the PR system one 550 with heated Humidifier and always used about half the tank of water each night.
In November I upgraded to the 560 with heated tube and the Tank is almost empty each morning on a setting of 3
I recently switched to the non-heated hose and the Tank is half full after one night.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
My tank is always empty in the morning. I've always used a heated hose.
Most of the evaporation is coming from the heated plate in the humidifier - I'd be surprised if the hose added much... it's just trying to not allow the already evaporated water from condensing.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
Switching between the heated hose and the regular one changes what the settings provide.
Pugsy has a better explanation of how this works.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
It is likely the water is condensing in the non heated hose and draining back to the tank.

That possible but half a tanks worth?LoBattery wrote:It is likely the water is condensing in the non heated hose and draining back to the tank.
I'm not experiencing any Rain out that I can detect.
Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
When the heated hose is not used the machine relies on the ambient humidity sensor in the machine to try to deliver whatever the humidity setting is supposed to deliver.
When the heated hose is used there is an additional sensor in the hose to help the machine maintain the chosen humidity.
It's a more consistent delivery of the humidity...doesn't bounce around as much.
I found that without the heated hose the humidity delivered isn't all that much when using the ambient humidity sensor only. So I wouldn't be surprised that less water is used.
Water usage will still vary even with a heated hose depending on the ambient room humidity but not as much as without a heated hose.
The default humidifier setting for when no heated hose is attached uses very little water even at the setting of 5 unless someone changes over to Classic mode.
A setting of 3 with a heated hose doesn't mean the same as the setting of 3 without a heated hose.
For this reason I like to use a heated hose year round and just vary the hose air temp for comfort. My nose likes consistent humidity at my preferred setting. When I start messing with the humidity delivered my nose tells me it doesn't like change.
I just live with the varying water consumption because it's not that big of a deal because it's better to keep my nose happy.
When my nose gets unhappy I get some nasty nasal allergy like symptoms. Had it happen not long ago when my humidifier lost total connection to my blower...so no heat or power to anything on the humidifier side (didn't recognize the heated hose and wouldn't let me choose a humidity setting and in general acted like no humidifier was attached) and no water used but nose was very unhappy and I sneezed and itched pretty much all day. The ugly nasal symptoms popping up was what got me to look at the humidifier. I first thought it was a heated hose issue but quickly realized the machine wasn't even seeing any humidifier. It was an electrical connection issue between the blower and humidifier.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
I actually slept better with the non-heated hose the last few nights. with the heated hose my nose was getting restricted on one side. setting of 3 may have been delivering too much humidification for me.
If I get a cold nose I will try using the heated hose and set the humidity to 1-2 instead of 3 and see what happens.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
We are never told just how much humidity the setting of 3 with a non heated hose might be.
We are told that the setting of 3 with the heated hose has a target humidity of 90% with a Respironics PR S1 machine.
I own a PR S1 machine and I have personal experience with both heated and non heated hose.
The setting of 5 with the non heated hose is less than 90%.
If you feel better with less humidity but get a cold nose by all means try the other settings with the heated hose.
Setting of 1 is 70% and setting of 2 is 80%.
Figure out what works well for your nose and just accept the water consumption (or lack of) as part of the deal.
Also accept that it will vary if the ambient humidity varies much.
When it rains I never use much water even with a heated hose. Some nights I might use almost all the water and the next night not much at all and never change the hose.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
Pugsy, Thanks for the detailed insight.
The Water use difference was not really a problem for me. I was just curious why the same settings would be so different.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
I would actually wake up at night when air stopped flowing or the hose made so much noise due to the tube completely filling up at a low section. I'd lift up the hose and glug glug glug, back into the tank and everything was fine. And that was with a heated hose. Making a long cosy for the tube helped. Wife likes a cold room. If humidity is set high it doesn't take much of a temp drop to cause condensation.jtravel wrote:That possible but half a tanks worth?LoBattery wrote:It is likely the water is condensing in the non heated hose and draining back to the tank.

Re: Heated Hose uses Twice the water
My the water in my DreamStation (with heated hose) does not last the entire night. I need to refill it at least once every night.
Before that I had an AEIOmed Everest 3 and two F&P CPAPs (including the first one on the market with integrated humidification). None of them was ever completely empty in the morning.

The highest automatic setting and the highest hose setting. Pressure min 13.5 / max 20.
