Dry mouth even when using chin strap and mouth tape

Post by davewalsh » Fri Feb 24, 2017 1:08 pm

I hit my one month CPAP anniversary yesterday. I've been very happy with my numbers (consistently under 1.0 with a 0.0 here and there), but I'm still experiencing dry mouth with both my Eson 2 and my Pilairo. I use a headband as a chin strap and I also put Durapore tape on my mouth, but the dry mouth persists. When I woke up this morning I purposely inflated my cheeks and nothing seemed to escape, so why am I still getting dry mouth?

I assume that the tape is still in place and sealed when you wake up so we know that the mouth breathing is totally prevented????

Do you take any medications of any kind that might tend to dry the mouth out or make it worse?

What is the humidity setting that you are using on your humidifier?

I don't know, but here is a product that I use:
For dry mouth - Orajel For Dry Mouth - https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss ... +dry+mouth

I use this every night - a bit between the gums and teeth lasts all night. Put a dab on the end of your tongue and work it between your lower teeth and gums. Repeat for upper teeth. Apply it just before the mask goes on and try not to suck it down before you fall asleep.

The tape is still in place, and as far as I know the mouth breathing is prevented, but for obvious reasons I can only confirm that I'm not breathing from my mouth when I wake during the night.

I am on no medications.

My humidity is set at 4.

I ordered some Xylimelts today from Amazon just in case, but I'd rather not use them if I don't have to.

Dry mouth just seems to happen more with some people than with other and sometimes we don't know why.
Generally we think the obvious..mouth breathing but if the tape is in place when you get up in the morning then it's a fairly safe assumption to make that it didn't come loose during the night and allow mouth breathing and miraculously seal itself. Tape doesn't usually work that way....once it comes loose it usually stays loose.

Now...I have heard from people like you who can't be mouth breathing (taping) yet they still have dry mouth and on no meds to blame it on.. We don't know why it happens but it does.
I don't know what to tell you except maybe try more humidity and see if the air going up your nose will make it to your mouth and maybe get a little moisture. It's a big stretch but worth trying as long as your nose is okay with more moisture.

Otherwise you just have to use one of those products designed to promote adding more moisture to your mouth and pay special attention to your own hydration in an effort maximize overall hydration.

I'm someone with dry mouth and have to prevent it. I've used the Orajel before bed with a Biotene spray at the bedside in case dry mouth woke me up. I usually slept through the night but my mouth would be a little dry in the morning. I am using 2 Xylimelts now before bed and so far they have lasted all night.
