Machine turning itself off and on repeatedly

Post by burton4550 » Sat Jan 21, 2017 6:34 pm

I have a Respironics Remstar Auto M series that keeps turning itself off and on, "only when I put on the mask".
I lost my power supply so I tried to replicate the power using AC adapters that fit and had similar power specs.
It turns on and runs just fine, but the second I put the mask on it'll turn off and then automatically turn back on repeatedly.
The humidifier light is also blinking and normally is solid.

Do you think this could be due to lack of power from the alternate power supply I'm using?

I'm hoping it's not the machine itself and I'm just using an adapter that's not compatible. I just find it weird that it runs just fine until I put the mask on.

I think that is exactly what the problem is. It try to draw more current when you start to breath but can't get it so it shuts down. Then it you breathing so it starts back up.

If you have the DC cord and a battery use that. Else you need to get a power supply that more closely matches the OEM supply.

That's what I'm thinking as well. I tried a lower voltage one and it would turn on the CPAP, but when the pressure started immediately do the same thing (Off and On repeatedly).
The higher voltage one works until I put the mask on.

I'm going to try a more powerful adapter and if that doesn't work I'll have to spring for another manufacturer power adapter.
Just wanted to get another opinion on it. Appreciate the answer.

I've heard that laptop power adapters hold a similar power outage for CPAP devices, so I may try that.

I guess I shoulda asked how this happened?

It needs more current. Read the label on the two and match the DC voltage AND current as close as possible.

You may be able to get away with that (if you know what you are doing) or just burn up your cpap (if you don't). You will need to make sure the polarity is correct - so if you don't have a voltmeter don't even try.

You may be able to order the proper power supply online.

those machines run off a 12 volt battery just fine. (not the humidifier, though)

While that is true, I do believe the M-series were the industries first to have a 12V humidifier model. Not all models were 12V tho so you have to check but even if it is 12V you may not want to run it while on a battery.

Doing a search of the forum I found a thread where it was reported the wire was too thin to carry the current needed to keep the cpap on. So keep that in mind too. Could that be your problem?
