Apnea is associated with nasal congestion. I wish someone told me this years ago. Anyway, it seems that, when asleep, my sinus closet to the pillow (when sleeping on my side) will become totally blocked. CPAP air can't penetrate (I wear a full mask) so I start pulling with all my neck muscles in an effort to breathe through my nose. Terrible head an face pains have twisted from this. I don't switch to mouth breathing easily.
To quantify the blockage rhinometry/ rhinomnetry readings would have to be taken while I sleep. This is just not going to happen; no doctor will bother.
So here's my question: Sleepyhead show me having greater "other apneas" when my nose is severely blocked. What does the category "other apneas" mean? Which study measurement might encompass this nasal obstruction? Just OA?
Btw, my kidneys failed from something called focal segmental glomerulo sclerosis (FSGS). The connection to apnea was known as late as 1987 and can be now found on a Mayo site page. But no one told of course.... watch your kidneys!
Thanks

No one told you because it's nonsense. No such association except purely incidental. If you have the humidifier set too high it can cause congestion however, so you could experiment to see if you need it at all, need it at a low setting, or if something else is responsible for your problem such a nasal turbinate that might need removal, or deviated septum. It's also possible that your mask doesn't fit well and presses on that nostril, so you'll have to look into that.
Many use a saline nasal rinse before bed, or just lie down (the time when you may feel your nose block from blood going to sinuses, etc) and use a kleenex before putting your mask on. If those don't work, see an ENT to find out if there's physical blockage.
And SH normally tells you which type of apnea is occurring, whether obstructive (which refers to e.g. your tongue blocking your airway - NOT your nose being blocked), or clear airway/central apneas, etc... but those are not related to nasal blockage - except as I said, incidentally... you don't have apnea because your nose is blocked. Why not post a few SH graphs here and maybe someone can help you figure out what's happening otherwise.

Re: Congestion and other apneas
I see it differently. If your sinuses are draining then gravity plays its card. Gravity is very persistent. Roll and put the other side down and the problem will migrate---rather quickly in my experience.
Re: Congestion and other apneas
I had similar issues but now I use NeilMed nasal rinses in a Waterpik machine with nose adapter once or twice a week and cortico steroid sprays most days. I have a slightly devoted septum but find the Airift P10 can quite quickly blow my nose open if I keep it clear before I go to bed.

Re: Congestion and other apneas
I have just been diagnosed with FSGS (kidney failure). My nephrologist is baffled at how suddenly the problem manifested itself this year. She states that this problem originated in the year. Only two notable events, besides this awful diagnosis, happened to me...I had a very mild case of shingles and I started using a cpap machine. I can't find any link to either to FSGS but obviously not feeling like wearing the mask anymore. I have long time severe psoriasis, which may, depending on what research you read, is linked to FSGS...however that problem on kidney functioning would have been more gradual. At a loss
