Moving forward on your own

I want to move forward with getting a machine on my own without my doctor. He is not helping me at all. I have a report from my first study which I am trying to get a copy of. Is it possible to get an APAP that I pay for on my own and figure this out without him?

Unless you buy a used one, you need a prescription. You can get a prescription from ANY doctor.
The second part of the study will indicate what pressure setting you will need to treat your apnea. If you get a machine, I'd set the lower setting at 7 and the upper setting at 20. Keep us informed.

As long as you have plain OSA and not complex or central apnea it is possible to use an APAP with full data to find an effective pressure.
Did your doctor dx you with apnea and write an order for the DME? If he did, the prescription in addition to the sleep study, is part of your medical record and you can get a copy and use it to buy online or any DME.
You can sometimes find new machines on the secondary market that you can buy without a prescription. Secondwindcpap.com , Amazon, CraigsList and some forum members. But you have to know what machines are full data so you don't buy a brick. If you come across one I would come back here and ask about that specific machine.

I got tired of playing grab ass with my doctor and the insurance company so I went and got my own Auto CPAP on craigslist. Using software like Sleepyhead I just monitor my progress and make adjustments as needed. I have an appointment with my doctor but I am considering cancelling because what's the point in seeing him at this point. I am learning more here than I could with him.

My work just changed insurance providers, which put all my doctors / facilities out of network. After going to the DME, they wanted to restart the monthly payments on my wife's CPAP (we were 4 months in on a 7 month rental - after which you own it - I wanted to pay off the final 3 months.) Absolutely BS! I skipped the insurance plan and ordered her a ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset - should arrive today from CPAP.COM

Of course, now we have to change doctors. I figure I'll just manage my own treatment. Not so sure about my wife though - she's a little higher maintenance.

Good for you. My doctor died last year, and I've been trying to re-train my new doctor. Work in progress...
