ResMed S9 VPAP Adapt Questions and Issues

Post by rdav » Wed Apr 18, 2012 2:24 pm

I am a new user of a ResMed S9 VPAP Adapt and cannot find definitions or meanings for the following numbers on the Treatment Display:

Leak = 0
MV = 9.7
TgMV = 7.8
RR = 20
Vt = 460
PS = 5.0
ASV = 5.0 to 9.2

Can anyone help me to understand what these numbers mean and signify?

Thanks in advance.

I'll take a stab at it ...
rdav wrote:... Leak = 0 ...
"Average leak during the selected period." ... This is the leak rate .. and zero is a great number.
rdav wrote:... MV = 9.7 ...
"Average minute ventilation during the selected period." ... Not something you really need to worry about.
rdav wrote:... TgMV = 7.8 ...
"Target minute ventilation .. Minute ventilation the device is attempting to achieve. Pressure support increases if the minute ventilation falls below the target, and decreases if it goes above the target." ... Again not something you really need to worry about. It is just one method this machine uses to determine if it needs to intervene. Essentially if you don't breathe deeply enough it will increase the pressure to help ascertain respiration.
rdav wrote:... RR = 20 ...
"Average respiratory rate during the selected period." ... This is the average respiratory rate (breaths per minute). Twenty is high and might indicate some other issue. Or it could be your breathing rate if you were awake and then read the RR value.
rdav wrote:... Vt = 460 ...
"Average tidal volume during the selected period." ... Not something you really need to worry about.
rdav wrote:... PS = 5.0 ...
"Pressure support (PS) .. Difference between the peak pressure at the end of inspiration and the minimum pressure at the end of expiration." ... This is probably the average Pressure Support (PS) during the selected period.
rdav wrote:... ASV = 5.0 to 9.2 ...
I am uncertain about this, but I suspect it indicates that your Pressure Support ranged from 5.0 to 9.2. Add that to your EPAP and you will get the maximum pressure that you saw. That's just my guess, since the Provider's Manual that I have does not have that listed.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much the info. It is much appreciated.

You mentioned that you have a Provider's Manual. I'm wondering if you could tell me how to get one.

Thanks.

By the way, you might want to consider registering your equipment and software ...

PS ... It's a largish file. If it bounces (because you can't handle an email that large), then I'll find another way to make it available.

so what should the PS setting be set on for this machine? mine is 3.0 but I'm having trouble falling asleep on it because the pressure is high. if you breathe in deeply that lowers the pressure for a few seconds....

There is no one proper Pressure Support setting for everyone. Rather there is a proper PS setting for you. The pressure support setting is determined during the titration study when you slept at a sleep lab. There is a protocol they should use to determine the proper settings. As we've said before, if you have problem with your therapy, you should discuss it with your doctor.
