How to get out of bed after being on cpap all night?

Post by cpapdude1 » Tue Jan 10, 2017 1:07 am

After being on cpap all night i always lay in bed for like a hour after unstrapping all the gear off my head. I like laying without it because i have cpap on all night is which is frustrating and uncomfortable.
How do i get up instead of napping?

I fall back asleep after pulling off everything. It just feels nice to not have crap all over my head and face.
But i know its not good for me.

Its always around a hour each morning.

Wow... never heard of this one before! Do not let yourself get into this habit. Once you get the gear off, get up.

Your not napping without your mask. You are having apnea events, starving your body for oxygen, and all the health problems that go along with it. Bad idea.

If your mask is frustrating and uncomfortable, something is wrong. You need to look into a diff. mask, or adjust what is wrong. Mask liners, hose hanger, special pillow, snuggle hose, mabe. Look at http://www.padacheek.com. I don't even feel or notice my mask 90% of the time.

Try a nasal pillow mask, or something with more minimal headgear. I'd be claustrophobic with your mask. Look at Swift FX, the headgear is less.

Dudes pressures are very high...ranging 17-20. He may need a bipap. Currently using a System One.

I guess I'm lucky. Sleeping without cpap gives me the mother of all headaches;
---even if it is only a short nap. When the mask comes off, the feet hit the floor.
Good habits are awesome tools, but it takes work to create them.
Try to get the appropriate machine, mask, and accessories, then read the success stories.

Set an alarm for when you actually need to get up, and get up when the alarm rings. I presume if you're sitting around for an hour without the mask that you have no morning obligations during that time. Just sleep longer with the mask on and get up when required/desired.

Sometimes when I wake I like to lay there for another hour with my CPAP on (weekends) because I wake feeling so calm and peaceful with pleasant cool air gently blowing into my nose. It feels so nice!

If you don't feel this way it's time to talk to your DME about a more comfortable mask and perhaps as noted above you may need a BIPAP to help your high pressures be more comfortable.

Don't take your mask off until you are sitting up and your feet are touching the cold ground and the light is on.

Stand up immediately and go splash water on your face. Make the bed and get dressed.

My thoughts exactly. It's a journey and sometimes traveled on a bumpy road. But you can solve many problems to improve your therapy.

roll over onto your stomach and read a book or read the news on your tablet/laptop. or set an alarm that you have to get out of bed to turn off.

Since you are spending an additional hour in bed anyhow, why not turn back the alarm clock to sleep another hour!

I recommend getting up in this order:
1. Sit up or stand up.
2. Turn on whichever lights you can turn on from bed.
3. Remove the mask.
4. Turn off the machine (if it doesn’t go off automatically).
5. Get out of bed (standing up).
6. Turn on the lights that you cannot turn on from bed.
7. Open the shades (daylight is important to synchronize your circadian rhythm).
8. Go about you daily activities (eat breakfast, bathe or shower, get dressed, take your medications, etc.).

Follow the sequence in reverse at night (or if taking a nap) if that’s an issue.
