I don't have sleep apnea... I have catathrenia...

Post by joeljjk11 » Thu Dec 29, 2016 8:32 am

I have discovered online what I actually have, it is catathenia. It is when I hold my breath in the middle of the night and make squealing and groaning noises. This is what I would do before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and got my machine. The thing is that it looks like central and apnea events but it really isn't, I am just holding my breath. The thing is though is that one treatment for it is a Cpap machine. It is caused by a medication that I take at night called Saphris, there are also people online who reported having catathenia with this med. has anyone been diagnosed with this?

Joel, how will you treat your catathenia?

Hello,

There is very little information out there on catathenia and it is a relatively rare disorder. I have read online though that CPAP can treat it. Unlike sleep apnea though, it has no negative health effects. I will continue to use my ASV machine though because it treats it and my wife needs to sleep comfortably through the night. I have also read online that stress and anxiety can contribute to catathenia and make it worse.

I do wonder if it is not the other way around - that catathenia increases stress and anxiety?

What is your blood O2 like when you are sleeping? Have you ever had a sleep study?
Or even an onvernite O2 to see what is happening?

You have "sleep disordered Breathing" That is why the official terms are no longer refers to "apnea"

Your SDB is treated effectively with an ASV so you can sleep without interruption.

Yes, CPAP or ASV is an effective treatment for catathrenia (there is a r in the word, I made a typo before.) It makes me wonder if people who are sometimes diagnosed with central or obstructive sleep apnea really have catathrenia and their doctors just aren't aware of it. I would not be surprised if it is more common than one would think.
